TRAINING
MIRA TO RELAUNCH APPRENTICESHIP SUPPORT PROGRAMME
Mira Showers has relaunched its Head Start apprenticeship support programme as part of its commitment to underwriting the future of the industry.
Loss of skill – as installers age
and retire – results in a reduced competitiveness in favour of economies and workforces that possess the know- how. This skill loss also boosts the cowboys, encouraged to try their hands at jobs for which they are unqualified. The Head Start programme is designed to give lecturers and students quality insights and technical materials to support teaching and learning in all areas of shower installation. Lecturers will receive an extensive series of A1 technical posters covering plumbing systems, and the installation of mixer, power and electric showers. They also receive A5 technical literature on mixer showers for distribution, plus all the documentation necessary for student registration. USB sticks are also provided. These include an e-learning module –
based on Mira’s trade installation DVD, product installation and user guides – and seven videos covering subjects such as commissioning electric showers, installing enclosures, bar valve installation and commissioning a Mira Discovery with reverse inlets. Published materials will be augmented with those on power showers and electrics later in the year.
SELECT GRADUATES REWARDED WITH LUNCH
Eleven enterprising managers from Scotland’s thriving electrical industry joined their employers at a special celebration lunch in March. The lucky 11 graduated from a new specialist course run by SELECT, Scotland’s trade association for the electrical, electronics and communications systems industry, and Edinburgh Napier University. The pilot course at Edinburgh Napier, which has
been running since October 2008, is the equivalent of a third year university programme, and the SELECT 11 – from Rok Plumbing and Heating, Arthur McKay, SELECT, FES, Weir & McQuiston and HF Electrical – were rewarded with the lunch ahead
of their official graduation ceremony, which will take place at Napier University in June. The course, which was tailored to the needs of managers who want to enhance their people management skills and their ability to positively engage with their staff in ways that realise potential, will now become a regular feature of SELECT’s bespoke training programme. Elaine Ellis of SELECT said, ‘This programme is aimed at people who have recently been appointed to the position of manager and/ or those who have been working in this capacity for a while but have had little or no management development in this role.’
