LIGHTING PROJECTS
SUCCESSFUL CONVERSION
Abacus Lighting’s design team has pulled off a successful tackle with a solution that has increased fl oodlighting levels by 400 per cent at the world famous Headingley Carnegie rugby stadium − a signifi cant increase in lighting levels that has, in fact, only doubled the club’s power consumption. The original fl oodlights at the stadium, which hosts top level Rugby League and Rugby Union, were installed back in 1968 and, although the original masts were replaced 20 years ago, the fl oodlights themselves have been lighting the ground for the past 42 years. The need for new fl oodlighting became apparent as Leeds Rhinos’ success in the
Engage Super League over the past three years, coupled with Leeds Carnegie’s presence in the Guinness Premiership, brought increased interest for televised matches. The previous lighting levels were also
presenting diffi culties with broadcasting in HDTV and, in order not to limit the opportunity to stage televised matches, Leeds Rugby bosses decided that it was time to upgrade the system. The existing 27 1kW fl oodlights were
replaced with 24 Challenger 3 2kW fl oodlights. This has increased the lighting levels from 300lux to 1200lux over the pitch, thereby giving much improved lighting levels with high energy effi ciency.
STREET WISE
The biggest street lighting project in the country has started as a result of a unique partnership between Hampshire County Council, West Sussex County Council and Southampton City Council. Work to replace and maintain 250,000 streetlights across Hampshire, West Sussex and Southampton in a £225m 25 year private fi nance initiative (PFI) is being carried out by Tay Valley Lighting, using its subsidiary contractor Southern Electric Contracting (SEC). The preferred bidder was announced in August 2009 and the individual contracts for each authority were concluded in December 2009. Hampshire’s 50 per cent stake in the project will see the replacement or
updating of 150,000 street lights, illuminated signs and bollards with the latest energy effi cient equipment during the fi rst fi ve years of the project. The focus for the following 20 years will be on maintaining and operating the new lights to a high standard, with Hampshire County Council’s monitoring team keeping a check on project delivery and operations. All lighting stock over 15 years old will be replaced in Hampshire on a like
for like basis, with white fl uorescent light replacing orange lamps in residential areas. This will give greater clarity and representation of colour and features.
