PROJECT FOCUS ROCKLIFFE HALL
FLEXIBILITY
The flexibility of Synergy is also demonstrated in various places throughout the hotel, with grid solutions being used in bar areas to provide multiple power and switch points. Furthermore, Legrand delivered a bespoke version of its new media plate in the same nickel finish in order to meet the SES requirement for a stylish and compact panel that would enable all of a guest’s media needs to be catered for in the various bedrooms, suites and lodges. the magnificent Orangery restaurant, restored stained glass windows and stunning oak staircases it literally oozes five star style. And it’s not just the old hall that carries off this classy act, the quality remains the same throughout the newly designed and built rooms and the Rockliffe garden lodge houses. In total the hotel has three
restaurants, two bars, and 61 sumptuous rooms, suites and lodges. The Orangery, which is headed by Michelin starred chef, Kenny Atkinson and will soon operate under his name, looks set to be the main attraction, but The Bistro and The Clubhouse are taking their lead from it, promising to use only the finest fresh produce available locally, as well as from specialist suppliers around the world. The two bars, the Cocktail Bar and Spikes, deliver a welcome choice between either cocktails, aperitifs and after dinner liqueurs, or a great selection of cask ales and lagers. As for the bedrooms, the beds are huge, the carpets deep and luxurious, and the Villeroy & Boch bathrooms have TVs set into the walls. And if that wasn’t enough, then the integrated audio, subtle lighting and smart technology combine to deliver an in room experience that makes you want to stay in your room.
THE TASK AHEAD
The job of turning Gibson’s vision for Rockliffe Hall into this stunning reality was tasked to one of the largest family owned private companies in Europe, The Shepherd Group − a York-based company that dates back to 1890 and can lay claim to being the inventors of the Portakabin. The £40.5m contract saw its construction division, Shepherd Construction, carry out the design and build work, while Shepherd Engineering Services (SES) handled the mechanical and electrical aspect of the project. Nigel Pickering, a Legrand area sales manager, comments, ‘At the time everyone in the electrical industry was well aware that Rockliffe Hall was on the horizon and everyone had heard rumours that it wasn’t going to be a simple price based specification, but instead one that was aimed at the very top end of the market.

PLANNING
Legrand’s recent past stood them in good stead with SES due to the fact the two had successfully worked together to supply wiring devices and cable management solutions for the four star deluxe Newcastle Airport International Hotel during 2008. As such Nigel and his team felt confident enough to try and sell-in the solutions they felt best suited Rockliffe House based on product quality, service and price rather than price alone. ‘After discussing the plans for the
project with the consultant specifier, Colin Arnott of White Young Green we quickly reached the conclusion that we had to focus on something other than price to secure the specification,’ explains Nigel. ‘Therefore, we opted for a dual
approach that saw us show just how easily our cable management and wiring device business units can work together to deliver a combined solution that simply couldn’t be matched, while also highlighting the suitability and flexibility of our Synergy decorative wiring devices for such a luxurious development.’ Dan Chappell, the SES project manager
for the Rockliffe Hall development, says, ‘When you look at a project like Rockliffe Hall you can see straight away that it’s all about quality and luxury. As such, the onus was on us to ensure the products installed reflected this and Legrand certainly made it easy thanks to the scope and quality of the products it offered.’
SYNERGY MODERN RANGE CREATE A WARM, YET CONTEMPORARY LOOK BY BLENDING STYLISH SILVER WITH THE TRADITIONAL WARMTH OF BRASS.
‘As a result everyone who could
deliver suitable products was exceptionally keen to do just that, and so battle lines were drawn for what promised to be a fierce and extremely competitive specification process.’
SOLUTIONS
Legrand prides itself on having wiring device solutions that can sit comfortably in any environment. Key amongst them is Synergy, a range that has widespread appeal due to the fact it was designed specifically with the intention of being able to complement every conceivable décor, while still meeting the practical and safety needs of installers and end users. A feat achieved through the availability of two different product forms, modern and traditional, and a selection of carefully chosen finishes aimed at catering for differing interior design themes. For Rockliffe Hall it was a nickel finished
solution from the Synergy Modern range that was deemed to be most suitable. Its design is intended to create a warm, yet contemporary look by blending stylish silver with the traditional warmth of brass, and when you see it installed throughout the hotel’s bedrooms, bars and general public areas it certainly lives up to its billing – the switches and sockets sitting stylishly in their various settings.
plates are available in all Synergy finishes, including Synergy modern which is supplied with anthracite interiors and decorative rockers. In their standard form they are supplied with two independent satellite in-feeds, one terrestrial TV socket, one video return socket and a secondary telephone socket, and are intended for use with satellite applications that feature live TV and recording facilities, such as Sky+ and V+. In this instance a bespoke version was developed in conjunction with SES, which featured two double sockets, one telephone outlet module and a coax cable entry point. ‘The media plate was another of the
reasons why we opted for Legrand,’ adds Dan. ‘Not only were they available in the same style and finish as all the other wiring devices they offered, but they also met all media aspects of the technologically advanced rooms in one standardised panel and, on top of that, they were quick and easy to fit.’
EXTRAS
And Legrand didn’t finish there. The company also supplied a significant propor tion of the cable management solutions used in Rockliffe Hall. This element of the specification included bespoke floorboxes in the gym, cocktail bar and morning room, and Swifts cable ladder to carry power and data cables throughout the basement.
‘As with wiring devices, the Legrand
Group is the world leader in cable management and so we are able to deliver solutions for any installation,’ says Nigel. ‘In this instance the cable management requirements were relatively straightforward, but where we had the advantage over our competitors was that SES was able to deal with one company for both the cable management and wiring device elements of the project – something that no one else was able to offer.’
Everyone in the electrical industry was well aware that Rockliffe Hall was on the horizon.
