High School Season Opening Regatta
Twenty- f ive Vanguard 15s
representing teams from 15 schools opened the high school racing season on March 6, in warm sunshine and a nice, but shifty breeze. The regatta, hosted by Seattle YC on Portage Bay, was scored in the two fleet format used in collegiate and high school racing, where each team sails a boat in the A fleet and a boat in the B fleet, and the total of the finishes in those fleets reflects the team’s score. It was amazing to see so many boats
on so small a patch of water, but the wind was cooperative and the sailors for the most part maneuvered their boats with dexterity and control, avoiding all but a few collisions, even on the crowded starting line. Although several teams had held only one week of practice, there were definitely strong performances by some, including a masterful domination of the event by Orcas High School, who scored 19 points. The next school with 31 points was North Kitsap / Kingston, and third was another NK/K team with more than double the score at 67 points. It is exciting to see the phenomenal
growth of skills in high school sailing in the NW District and the continuing interest and involvement among schools new to the Interscholastic Sailing Association. The ISA has been helpful in promoting interest and skills among the high schoolers, and NW District representative and Orcas coach Burke Thomas has been an enthusiastic and successful recruiter of new schools to ISSA. Interested high school students can find information about teams and events on the NWISA website.

This casual just-for-fun race series
of six races on Lake Union occurs in January and February. We had record participation for a single race of 38 boats and overall of 60 boats this season. Several boats shared the 1st place limelight and some truly deserved a persistence award for coming out consistently for their own fun - 10 boats showed up for all six races. The second race we tried two laps,
but the wind went on vacation so only half the fleet finished within time limits. Winds, as usual were generally mild and flukey on Lake Union, resulting in some uncommon course set-ups, plus a pre-start course change on the final race that didn't get out to everybody caused some confusion. For years we've been blessed with mostly dry conditions, but this year the weather gods were playing with us.
Several hot rods stopped by for tune-
up runs during the series. Tantivy put in a strong performance when it showed up for the final race. Muffin took home two firsts out of three races. Shoot the Moon took a first and a second out of three starts. Nefarious put on a show by taking a strong first place finish for its only race of the series. Black Knight and Tenacious took second and third place for the series for consistently strong performances. Tipsy Gypsy took three firsts out of six races and first place for the series. Marine crew for proposing and hosting our first series-end party.
