Leg Overboard!

We really, really appreciate the pictures Jan Anderson took of the Blakely Rock Race. Gav Jacobson (on cabin top) is an Iraq Vet, a friend of my son. He lost a leg while serving as a tank driver in the Marines. He thought he did not have to put on his foul weather gear. Only wore his shorts and cotton long underwear, against our constant recommendations otherwise. Must be the Marine part that thought he was not going to get cold. He made it fine around the mark at Scatchet Head, but faded soon after beating back to the finish. Spent the remaining part of the race in the companion way. I have a young, new crew who has only sailed for a year and they have a lot to learn. Sometimes the hard way.

Funny thing about that leg. He lost it overboard while

racing the Anthony’s Race on Lake Washington. It was the first race, we were ahead and had to do a “leg-overboard” drill. We were tacking and my son, Keegan, in his enthusiasm, grabbed Gav by the leg to quicken his transfer to the other side of the boat. Turns out he grabbed the wrong leg and it flew off the boat. Lucky for us it floated due to the Air Nike shoes he had on. We had to make a 180 and motor back through the rest of the fleet to retrieve it.

Now that’s a story we’ve never heard before. Yes, great

picture by Jan Anderson – looks like you guys are really enjoying the day. Just goes to show, most every time people go out on the water, it usually results in something memorable. That’s why sailors can tell you what they did on every leg (no pun intended) in a race they did years ago.
