Seattle Regattas Will Be Stepping Stones To World Events for Top J/24 Competitors
Over two weekends in May, J/24
sailors will compete for up to four berths in the 2011 World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and slots for two countries in the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. The unprecedented number of
invitations to the world-class events will go to the top sailors in the J/24 North American Championship, May 19-23, and in the Sailing World National Offshore One-Design (NOOD) regatta May 14-16. Both regattas will be hosted by Corinthian YC on Shilshole Bay in Seattle. Seattle Yacht Club is a co-sponsor of each. “The North Americans and NOOD
are a big draw in themselves for J/24 sailors, and these berths make them a much bigger draw,” said North Americans Chair Joy Okazaki, predicting the events could draw as many as 60 boats. “We expect some of the top competitors in the world to attend.” The International J/24 Class is the world’s largest one-design keelboat

class, with about 6,000 boats competing in more than 40 countries. The World Championship and Pan Am berths will be awarded as follows: • At NOOD, berths will go to the top boat from the “Western Region”—boats hailing from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, California, Arizona, Nevada or Utah. NOOD will double as this year’s J/24 Western Regional Championship. • At the North Americans, one berth will go to the top previously unqualified boat regardless of the country of origin. In addition, the top two U.S. sailors who have not previously qualified will get invitations. • The regatta has been named a Pan-Am country qualifier because J/24s will be used for the keelboat competition at the 2011 games. Shaw Island Winter Classic
The 2010 Winter Shaw Race was over
pretty quickly. There was solid wind all the way around the course. Some saw gusts to 30 knots. The West entrance to Wasp Passage, where parking lots often develop, was filled with sailable wind this year. The usual 120° wind shifts were abundant through the balance of Wasp Passage but the fleet came through it in quick order but not without a lot of tacking. Congratulations to the winning crews aboard Wild Rumpus in division A and to Waioli in division B. The party at the Hotel after the race
was really fun as always.
