It was true in 1994 and it’s still true today.

We ran this ad 16 years ago to bring attention to the need for all of us to chip in and protect our waters from the perils of pollution. We’ve been actively involved in the cause since then and continue to invest in the infrastructure necessary to meet our

SEAVIEW POP QUIZ

1. What do the letters BMP stand for? A. Brightwork Must Peel B. Bilge Mess Protector C. Best Management Practices D. Boaters Must Pay E. All of the above

They’re all very good answers (especially “D.”) but “C. Best Management Practices” is the correct answer. Best Management Practices are boatyard management and usage guidelines for activities that prevent or reduce the discharge of pollutants. Boatyards are full of pollutants including paints, thinners, solvents, cleaning fluids, coolants, oil and petroleum products. In 1988 and 1989 a group of small boatyard owners and property owners from Lake Union and the Lake Washington Ship Canal area gathered and reviewed the current BMPs for Shipyards in hopes of adapting them for use by smaller boatyards. The result was the Small Boatyard BMPs which were presented to appropriate city, county, and state agencies. These guidelines formed the foundation for the current guidelines used by the Department of

Ecology. Seaview Boatyard management has been involved in the BMP process and also to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). The BMPs address activities such as boatyard cleaning, storm water drainage, chemical storage, accidental oil discharge response, pressure washing, sandblasting debris handling, dust and overspray control, and paint and solvent mixing. As a boatyard customer you are just as responsible as the boatyard management in preventing discharge of pollutants. If you would like to know more about the BMPs before your next haulout give us a call and we’d be happy to send you more information. We all must do our part to keep our water

and air clean. The consequences of neglect are a lot like letter “D.” above. Let’s take care of our natural resources today so we can enjoy them tomorrow.
