New shapes from Speedo
Uhlsport goalkeepers
F
or the first time in South Africa in 2010, Uhlsport’s stable of
international goalkeepers will all wear identical gloves in a World
Cup. The players have agreed to wear gloves without their individual
design choices, with a view to cutting production costs, and
subsequent proceeds from the range will support an SOS Children’s
village in Ennerdale, South Africa – which is home to children who have
lost their parents to AIDS.
“Uhlsport’s initiative is a great idea,” said Pepe Reina, the Liverpool
and Spain goalkeeper. “I support it because it is necessary and because
it is very much in our power to help these children.”
Uhlsport’s compact World Cup collection will be available to
specialist retailers from May, and many of the goalkeepers will start to
wear the gloves in their respective domestic leagues this Spring. Two
glove models will be available at retail, one for £49.99 with a glove
bag, and one for £29.99 with a water bottle.

S
peedo has launched its new Shapeline range of women’s swimwear,
which is intended to give women the nearest thing to a made-to-
measure swimsuit.
Speedo’s R&D Aqualab researched body shapes by body-scanning 5,400
women in the UK. The results showed that 95% of women fall into one of
three body shape categories: Bottom Hourglass, Hourglass and Top
Hourglass, and Speedo has produced a swimsuit for each: the Bust Shaper,
Waist Shaper and Tummy and Hip Sculptor. All styles feature double-layered
stomach panels to provide maximum support, and nipping in at the waist to
accentuate curves.
With an RRP of £100, the new Shapeline suits became available from
March 1 at
www.speedosculpturre.co.uk and selected Rigby and Pellar and
Bravissimo outlets.

Nike makes
World Cup launch
N
ike launched the team strips for 10 World
Cup teams at the end of February in
London (including the Umbro-made-under-
Nike-ownership England strip), and also flew in
Christiano Ronaldo to launch its new range-
topping boot, the Mercurial Vapor Superfly II.
The lightweight Mercurial Vapor Superfly II
features a new traction system with studs that
can extend and retract by up to 3mm, with a
view to giving players the best opportunity to
accelerate swiftly, while a re-engineered upper
is designed to provide an enhanced fit and, if
you will, ball control.
“For me, it’s all about first-step acceleration,
but twisting and turning around a defender is
also important,” said Ronaldo. “The Mercurial
Vapor Superfly II helps me do both.”
The new boot is scheduled for April 1 retail
delivery and comes with a jaw-dropping RRP
