STAG sets sights on Ireland
Chromafusion
Waterloo
T
he STAG Buying Group has announced it will hold its inaugural buying
show in Ireland this year, from October 31-November 1.
The show will be held at the Tullamore Court Hotel, which is centrally
located in County Offaly, to the west of Dublin, and the STAG
Made in
group is expecting a contingent of 35 suppliers to exhibit, and
around 120 invitation-only retailers.“We are inviting every Irish
the UK
STAG member to the show from both the Republic and
Northern Ireland, which we expect to total around 85
members,” Ward Robertson, joint managing director of STAG,
tells Sporting Goods Business. “While in our UK shows we only
invite STAG retailers, for our first Irish show we are going to
make it as busy as possible for the suppliers by inviting a
selection of non-STAG sports, outdoor and shoe retail businesses, but on a written, invitation-only basis. We have
to ensure that the retailers that attend are of a certain quality, as it would be no good bringing retailers that have a
track record of not paying their bills.”
Invitations to suppliers were sent out at the end of February.
“We are in no doubt that we will be fully booked in terms of suppliers,” adds Robertson. “To make a successful
trade show we estimate you need three retailers to attend for every exhibitor. If the show receives 35 exhibitors
and 105 retailers, that would be fine. The ratio of independent retailers to the population in Ireland is far higher
than it is in the UK, so we think we can be more ambitious with the retailer numbers at our show. If 120 attend,
that is a really good number.
“Over the past year Stag has become the largest buying group in Ireland by a country mile. We have 25
members in Northern Ireland, and while a year ago we had one member in the Republic of Ireland, we now have
35. We expect our Republic of Ireland membership to grow to between 50-60 by October - I have no doubt about
that. Our track record speaks for itself and we are in talks with quite a few retailers, and I will be spending two
weeks in Ireland this month, speaking to retailers and suppliers.”
