Sir Richard Branson has pledged his profits from Virgin Holidays and Virgin Atlantic to fund research and develop new renewable fuels.

Virgin Atlantic, with partners Boeing, GE and Imperium Renewables, successfully carried out the first commercial aircraft biofuels blend trial in 2008. Work continues, to develop sustainable biofuels that can be used across the fleet.

Virgin Atlantic has ordered 15 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with an option on 20 more. The Dreamliner burns around 27% less fuel per passenger than an A340-300.
