December 2009/January 2010
Until even a year ago, many of the
organisations supposed to be developing new attractions as part of
Dubailand were very quiet when it came to detail, as indeed was
Tatweer, the government-owned developer of the entire project. Now
some will readily tell you they have abandoned their plans, while
others are on hold indefinitely.
It’s no longer cool to crow about new projects in Dubai, and when
the Emirate state is forced to go cap in hand to neighbouring Abu
Dhabi, you know the problems are widespread.
One of the casualties of recent months was Nakheel (another
government-backed enterprise), which together with Kerzner
International opened Atlantis on The Palm Jumeirah in 2008. The
hotel and waterpark development sits at the brow of this manmade
island, yet a lot of the reclaimed land around it has yet to be
developed.
Financing issues aside, I have always questioned if Dubai is the right
place to be building so much family entertainment. If you really do
build it, are they guaranteed to come?
