Precious Garnets by Wendy Emerson
EARRInGs
1 Cut two 3 ½” lengths of sterling silver wire. hold both wires together firmly and treat as one. use wire cutters to flush cut the tip
of one end. use round nose pliers to form a small tight loop at the trimmed end. using flat nose pliers, form a loose spiral leaving
a 1 ½” inch tail. With tails pointing away from you, grasp spirals between your thumb and forefinger. Position a dowel against
the tails on the opposite side of the spirals. holding dowel close to the spirals, bend the wire tails down over the dowel to form ear
hooks. Trim ends flush and file smooth with needle file. use flat nose pliers to add a slight kink at the tip to prevent the wire from
sliding out of the ear. Work harden and add texture to the earwires with a chasing hammer and bench block. Note: Treating wires
as one ensures uniformity.
2 string a headpin with a 4mm round bead, two garnet chips, and a 4mm round bead and make a wrapped loop. Repeat three more
times. string two beaded headpins onto each earwire.
BRACELET
1 Cut a 22” length of beading wire and string 2 ½” of garnet chips, positioning them in the center of the wire.
2 Bring the ends of the wire together and string a crimp bead onto both wires, forming a loop with the garnets and crimp. Cover with
a crimp cover. Note: Make sure the button fits through the garnet loop, adjusting the number of garnet beads as needed.
3 separate the wires and string a 2mm round bead, a tube bead, and a 2mm round bead onto each wire. Bring the wires together and
string a 4mm round bead, two garnet chips, and a 4mm round bead onto both wires. Repeat four times.
4 Bring the wires together and string a crimp bead onto both wires. separate the wires and slide each wire up through opposite sides of
a silver-tone vintage button. string three garnet chips onto each wire and then bring the wires down through the button on opposite
sides. Bring wires back through the crimp bead, pulling taut. Trim excess wire and cover the crimp bead with a crimp cover. Note:
After pulling bracelet taut, ensure there is enough give to curve the bracelet around the wrist, adjusting the tension if needed.
