Rose Petal Scarf by Naoko Nojiri & Jannell Botto
1 Separate Wool Roving into small pieces. Lay pieces of white and ivory Wool Roving along three lengths of bubble wrap (12x60”
and two 12x12”), keeping the Roving all going in one direction.
2 Make a second layer by placing pieces of white, ivory, and peach wool roving on top of the first layer. The pieces of roving on
the second layer must be placed perpendicular to the first layer.
3 Scatter threads of soy silk fiber on top of the second layer.
4 The roving should be approximately 48x6” long for the scarf and 10x10” for each of the square pieces that will be used for the
flowers. After the wool roving is felted it will shrink 50-75% in the direction that you roll it.
5 Apply warm soapy water. Immediately rub the wool roving to create bubbles on the surface. Make sure the entire surface of the
roving is covered in bubbles.
6 Roll up the three pieces of bubble wrap. Roll about 6” of bubble wrap at a time, and then do the next section. Repeat until the
entire length is rolled. Roll with pressure. The more you roll it, the more it felts together.
7 Unroll the bubble wrap and check felting. If you can lift portions of the felt and it stays together, you are done. The scarf has a
variable look with different thicknesses of felt and uneven curved sides.
8 Rinse in cold water and drip dry.
9 To make roses, cut each of the dry squares of felt into three 10x2” strips. Cut these strips into 1 ½” to 2” pieces. The sizes of
these pieces will vary. Roll the narrowest strip into being the center of the flower. Add more strips around the edges until you
are happy with the size of the flower. Each time you add a piece of the flower you must poke the bottom of the flower with your
felting needle until the new section is joined to the flower.
10 Sew three roses on one end of the scarf and one rose on the other end.
11 Sew beads sprinkled along each end of the scarf.
12 Cut 12” of 20mm gold Italian mesh ribbon. Wind this ribbon into the petals of a rose, ruffling the Italian mesh ribbon as you
insert it. Secure by sewing the mesh to the rose at the bottom. Repeat with another 12” length of 20mm gold Italian mesh ribbon
and two 12” lengths of pink Italian mesh ribbon in the remaining three flowers.
13 Ruffle a 72” length of 6mm gold Italian mesh ribbon by pulling out its sides. Sew this ribbon in a wavy trail down the middle
of the scarf. Repeat with a 72” length of 6mm pink Italian mesh ribbon, tucking it in right next to the gold piece.
