Valley Life 15 Anza’s skies... (cont. from page 14)

Roman Empire eventually settled on the 97/400 rule (close enough for rock-n- roll), where leap years happen in years that are divisible by 4 or 400, but not 100, 200, or 300, which means this year is a Holy Roman Leap Year, or something like that.

February got the original designation as extra-day receptacle because it was

the last month of the year in the old Roman calendar where March (Mars’ month - Mars “rules” Aries) was the first month and December was the 10th month, January the 11th, and then February ended the year with 28 days (having sacrificed a day to August to honor Augustus). March was the first month because this was the month of the equinox. Thus, the original leap day was indeed added at the end of the year as they saw it, and when the Christians took over Rome, the calendar became a religious one.

And, if that’s not confusing enough, the original leap day was inserted

between February 24 and February 25, meaning a second February 24 was observed – the “bissextile.” This was inserted precisely one month before the official observation of the equinox on March 25, or the sextile of April, “sex” being the Latin for “six,” as in the “sextant,” which is set at an angle of 60 degrees. The early Romans had a peculiar way of counting the days of the month, as the last days of a month were counted down to the first day of the next month. The simple count to 30 or 31 (or 28 or 29) did not come into use until after the Dark Ages.

Pope Gregory (whom the Gregorian Calendar is named after) signed the official orders to modify the calendar on Feb 24, 1582, reminding us of the original day count scheme, but also of the trouble that leap days have caused for so many OCD types throughout history. Super Bowl prediction: The last time these two teams met in the big game, it was a leap year, and the biggest upset in perhaps all of sports history was pulled off by the scrappy Giants. This year’s astrology at game time also suggests an upset, a comedy of errors by one team causing them to lose big, and so I say Eli remains the dragon Brady could not slay, but only because his team’s defense really bites. (btw... The Packers suck!! 15 and TWO?? Maybe next year Rogers & Co. will use the universal symbol for “I’m choking!!” as a touchdown celebration move instead of that silly title belt thing they do.) See you in March!
