SURF SCENE

ming a leg on this fast world class pre- Olympic showing by the USA, It was a thriller, again so very close to an upset. Note, too, the outstanding 1500 meter showing by China’s Sun Yang in 14:34.14 for a new world record in that punishing long race! Again, watch for the teenage sen- sation on the American women’s team, Missy Franklin, in the 100 meter and 200 meter backstroke. In the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke watch Jessica Hardy and Re- becca Soni. If everything falls into place for them as USA Olympic team members, we should remember their names. Like surfing in the past, it’s all too often you hear, “Who’s that guy or gal?” Seldom mentioned Kate Ziegler is one

The Olympics are Coming - July 2012, London England

W

ith about eight months away, let us hope again to see many of our USA Olympic athletes

standing on the awards podium bedecked with those beautiful medallions hanging from deserving shoulders. American men’s and women’s swimming stars may carry our boldest efforts ever towards new Olympic and world records, and gold, sil- ver and bronze medals. America will enter swimming aces

Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and America’s new teenage swimming darling, 16-year- old Missy Franklin. Swimming sensation, Michael Phelps, has already earned 14 gold medals and today is considered one of the most outstanding athletes in Olympic his- tory! And not since teenager Helen Madi- son from Seattle, has America had such a powerful dominating woman swimmer like Missy Franklin. These colorful swim- ming athletes, both male and female, will soon be challenging other talented swim- mers from around the world. The Olympic spirit has already been

displayed during this past summer’s World Track and Field Championship along with its sports partner World Swimming and Diving Championships via Shanghai, China and Soul South Korea. Talk about a summer display of perseverance by American ath- letes with their world domination and their winning times. During the “Roaring Twenties” this

dominating trend began in championship meets for swimming and track. One can see the same patterns beginning to unfold for our swimming and diving team mem- bers in past pre-Olympic Games - perhaps again in 2012. Thank the powers that be we have Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte’s powerful competitive spirits to carry us

through some very impressive world dom- inating times. Great swimmers from Australia, China,

France, Germany, Japan, Brazil, Russia, Italy and Canada are closing in and now chal- lenging the United States. Japan unexpect- edly did just this in the1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. Presently, a strong Australian team might try to do the same against us in London??? In diving, look for China to be in gold

medal contention as they have been with their talented gymnastics programs. Al- though, American divers David Boudia and his diving partner Thomas Finchum could well be strong American contenders in the tower diving from 33 1/3 feet above the surface of the water. Tower diving has al- ways carried audience appeal as it has often proved exceedingly dangerous to the divers to say the least! Contenders who might try to stop

Michael Phelps in his quest to dominate the Olympic swimming program, as he did in the last two Olympic Games, are Ryan Lochte, USA, Paul Biedermann, Germany, ParkTee-hawn, So. Korea, and SunYang, China. Phelps, in turn has mentioned he may lower his attempts and go for four or five Olympic wins this time around. Per- haps his pressing threats could well come from other soundly conditioned swimmers mentioned above. Remember their names as well. Watch,

too, the powerful colorful challenging duel in the men’s 400 meter medley relay. Not- ing these past summer’s close world cham- pionship results 1st- UNITED STATES - 3:32.06, 2nd-AUSTRALIA - 3:32.25, 3rd- GERMANY - 3:32.50, 4th- JAPAN – 3:32.89 … Talk about close!!! By the way, Michael Phelps was swim-

of America’s best at the 400 and 800 meter races in swimming. Also Natalie Coughlin is a USA collegiate champion in both the backstroke and 100 meter freestyle races. In the men’s 50 and100 meter freestyle are Garrett Weber-Gale, Nathan Adrian and possibly Michael Phelps. Amer- ica’s Peter Vanderkaay could be competing in the 1500 meter freestyle as well as for- mer Mission Viejo star Chad La Tourette. In these Olympic Games, countries like

France, Germany, England, Japan, Australia and Russia will command world attention with their new found determination..

Watch for China to come forward as a pos- sible new world swimming power! Also, three powerful swimmers from Canada and Italy could steal some of America’s past world domination in these events. Watch for exceptional performances from Brent Hayden from Canada swimming in the100 meter freestyle sprint and team- mate Ryan Cochrane in the 1500 meter race. The women’s world champion and record holder Federica Pellegini of Italy will be a strong challenger in all the 200 freestyle events. In closing, the unsung race of this past

summer was the men’s 200 meter sprint. Note - Lochte USA 1:44.44 – Phelps USA 1:44.79 – Biedermann from Germany 1:44.88-PaTae-hwan South Korea 1:44.92 and Yanick Agnel France 1:44.99. This could be the number one pure power race for the upcoming Olympic swimming con- tests…

RAVES Switching to the sport of surfing …

Kelly Slater now has to rank alongside Michael Phelps as two of the greatest in their sport today, both excelling to the far side of farther -- perhaps they are beyond those athletes we presently tend to believe as being exceptional!!! b
