BOYS & GIRLS CLUB Inspiring A Generation of Civically Engaged Youth by Teri Halliday I
f you were a mouse in the corner of the Boys & Girls Club, what
would you see on a bright after-school day? You would see kids of all ages racing into the Club, smil- ing, calling to friends, being greeted by staff. You would see over 75 kids at once doing their home- work in Power Hour being guided and tutored by staff and mentors, a gym full of kids playing Scatter- ball (an all-time favorite), kids in the Games Room setting Club records for building the tallest wooden block tower (over six feet!) while oth- ers Freeze Dance to their favorite rockin' music, art hanging on the walls made from recycled materials, the Great Fu- tures Gazette being published by “re- porters” from the Paparazzi Journalism Club, kids in the Great Futures Learning

Center performing in the Reader's Theater, and a multitude of teens “chillaxing” in the new Be Great Cafe reading room. Look a little closer and you'll witness
quiet moments,
too...staff praising a kid for being Caught Building Character, staff counseling a troubled child in partnership with mom or dad, a teen sharing her time with a younger member, a future chef in Cooking Class offering to help clean-up, and members heading home tired, happy, content and looking forward to the next day.
These images are snapshots of a bigger
picture too - A Formula For Impact. We start with young people who need us most. They are brought into our Club
where, through Five Key Elements for Pos- itive Youth Development, they are exposed to a developmentally rich environment that provides 1) fun, 2) a safe, positive en- vironment, 3) supportive relationships with adults and peers, 4) opportunities and high expectations and 5) recognition. These elements are the difference be- tween running programs to keep kids busy and trying to have a lasting impact on them. Research shows that the more youth attend the Club on a daily basis, the more we are able to deepen our impact on them. We encourage daily attendance (cur- rently over 300) and engage them in tar- geted programs that support outcomes in three important areas:
