merchandising and been involved in the software/ techie side of retail business sys- tems, but all along Ron dreamed of opening a business in his home town, San Clemente. Over the years he checked out different
business opportunities, but none of them were quite right. Then, on a fateful camping trip at San Elijo State Beach the family was running low on supplies and Ron went in search of a nearby store to stock up. By pure chance he pulled up in front of Just Peachy, a small neighborhood grocery store in Leu- cadia, and something about it really struck his fancy. The outside of the store was deco- rated with colorful beach umbrellas and bunches of fresh cut flowers, with bushels of fresh fruits and vegetables crowded around the front door, luring customers in- side.
Upon returning to the campground Ron
could not stop talking about that store and he could not get over the idea that he had stumbled upon something he would love to bring to San Clemente. After months of ob- sessing, his wife, Diana, finally said, “why don’t you just go for it?” And go for it he did! It didn’t take long for Ron to develop a
business plan for an organic/health food market named in honor of the city’s founder Ole Hanson. Soon, he was looking for the perfect location. After a nearly two-year search, his diligence was rewarded when he found 415 E Pico. Boasting a central location with easy access to both the freeway and Coast Highway, the best part of the property by far was the ample parking with two easily accessible driveways. At the same time Ron was busy building
contacts with local food suppliers. Over the past couple of years he has cultivated a net- work of grower/producer direct contacts to supply his market. And Hanson’s now carries locally grown fruits and vegetables, breads and baked goods from nearby bakeries and California grown and produced meats and cheeses. Of course not everything can be pro-
duced within the local radius, but Hanson’s specializes in products that eliminate the “middle man.” Items like Growers First Cof- fee, whereby Latin-American coffee growers supply their coffee beans straight to the mar- ket instead of to the large corporate chains that typically occupy your grocer’s shelf. It is Ron’s hope that by providing local and
grower direct items he can bring high quality items at a reasonable price to the people of San Clemente. An added bonus is the pas-
sion that those suppliers bring to their product. He has no- ticed that almost every item they stock in the store has an interesting and passionate story behind it, whether it is a parent whose child was gluten intolerant and they developed a tasty gluten free cookie, or a local avocado grower whose family has been growing avo- cados in Fallbrook for four gen- erations. Equally important to the
local and organic grocery de- partment is the expansive “Place for Health and Well- ness” department. This depart- ment features a well-stocked selection of vitamins, supple- ments, botanicals, and beauty supplies, along with a children and baby sections. But as with the rest of the store, the
true advantage of Hanson’s Place for Health and Wellness is its helpful and knowledgeable staff. Nutritional consult- ants Kelly Wolfe, Crystal Green and Joan Andersons’ job is to educate and provide assistance and direction to the community. On a recent afternoon local resident Susan Finney spent an informative 15 minutes with consultant Joan Anderson. Joan gave Susan advice on which vitamins and sup- plements were best suited to the needs of her small children. “I was really pleased at the amount of
time Joan spent with me,” said Susan. “Her knowledge of the different products was really very helpful.” Joan, Chrystal and Kelly have ample ex-
perience and training in the fields of natu- ral healing and nutritional counseling, and can be counted on to provide sound ad- vice both for the novice shopper looking to start a health routine, and the experi- enced health addict who is looking for new ways to expand their healthy routine.
