able to shoot both hostages before being killed, the presenters held nothing back when debrief- ing the incident to the crowd.
Another presentation centered on the Febru- ary 2013 hostage rescue in Alabama conducted by FBI HRT. Several days earlier, Jimmy Lee Dykes abducted a 5-year-old boy from a school bus after killing the bus driver. Dykes held the boy captive in an underground bunker; accessed only by a hatch. He spoke with police through a ‘speaking tube’ protruding from the ground. T e tube was later discovered to be booby trapped. Negotiators were able to get remote access viewing of the bunker with covert devices. Ini- tially, the suspect displayed what they called a ‘grandfatherly attitude’ toward the youngster. As time passed, Dykes’ demeanor deteriorated to the point that direct action was warranted. T e confi guration of the bunker posed mul- tiple problems. T e homemade hatch, which was discussed in detail, was a composite of several construction materials. It was horizon- tal and nearly fl ush with the ground. Multiple cables secured the hatch closed. T e speakers discussed at length all the breaching options they considered and the ra- tionale for each. T e situation was further com- plicated by almost vertical steps into the main compartment and tight confi nes. T e initial breach was slowed by extra unseen cables. T e fi rst operator inside went directly to the child to shield him. Following operators approached Dykes, who was killed.
ATTEND THE SYMPOSIUM Why attend the 2015 International Breaching Symposium? T e answer is relatively simple. Forced entry is an essential task for every tactical unit. Here, you can try out tools under realistic conditions and witness pragmatic demonstra- tions. Where else can an offi cer from a municipal agency rub shoulders with a Tier One operator from one of 14 countries in attendance? T e in- formation exchange at that level is valuable in and of itself. Add to that the subject matter ex- perts and case studies from actual missions. To put the role of the vendors in perspec- tive, Alan Brosnan summed it up, “T e In- ternational Breachers Group is grateful to the constant support we receive from the loyal companies who continue to support the annual Breachers Symposium. We fully understand the importance and credibility these reputable companies aff ord the breaching community during these testing times of countering ongo- ing criminal and terrorist activities.”
Plans for the next symposium are underway by the International Breachers Group with projected dates of Nov. 1-5, 2015 in the metro Memphis area. Details will be on their website.
