S SERGEANT FRED MEYER Greeley, CO Police Department 2015 SWAT Team Leader of the Year
8 Tactical Response Winter 2015
SDI, the less-lethal ammuni- tion maker, and the editorial staff of Tactical Response and LAW and ORDER recognize ex- emplary performance by SWAT team leaders in the form of an annual competition. T is judged evaluation is open to law enforce- ment personnel who are cur- rently active with the team, and currently in the position of Team Leader or Team Commander. T e Team Leader can come from a full-time or part-time team. For this recognition, while team ac- complishments and individual achievements may be worthy, we look especially for leadership ac- complishments.
Sgt. Mike Anderson is the Entry Team Leader of the Roseville-Rocklin Regional SWAT Team in Placer County, Calif. He has been in that capacity for the past three years and has served in the capacity of Assistant Team Leader for several years prior to that. Sgt. Anderson’s performance during two difficult callouts is the basis for this nomination. The first involved a gang member who shot a federal agent. An exchange of gunfire left several team members with shrapnel wounds, including Sgt. Anderson. The second involved a search for a suspect who killed a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy. Sgt. Anderson led the team in a clearing operation from where the shooting occurred back to a suspected location. Sgt. Anderson was the team’s rock during both of these chaotic situations. The team members relied on his calm demeanor and trusted his leadership to help them through. They looked to him for strength and guidance. The example of inner strength sets a strong example for the team members to follow. Sgt. Anderson puts his team first every day and they are a team that cares for each other because of how they see their Sergeant care for them.
