W
ith 551 inches of snow per year on average and 116- plus runs, Alta Ski Area is a passionate skier’s play-
ground. “We first visited with our children and have returned
every year since,” shared a skier riding Sugarloaf lift. “Now our grandchildren ski here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if their kids do too.” But before you load up your snowboard, you should know that Alta is a skiers-only area, one of only three in the nation. One reason Alta attracts such a passionate crowd is its snow…an average of over 46 feet of dry, fluffy snow each year. Another is the terrain. From mild to extreme, Alta’s glacier-carved terrain also includes an abundance of bowls and chutes. Catch the steeps on a powder day and you’ll never be the same! Powderhounds looking for a stash should try Catherine’s Area off of Supreme lift. Beginning skiers, don’t worry—over half of the runs up here are easy to inter- mediate, especially off Sunnyside lift. The vibe comes from the people who live, work and ski at
Alta. It is unpretentious and relaxed. Look around and you’ll see skiers of all ages, toddlers to seniors, united by a love of snow. You’ll also feel an excited buzz, something like a hum, as they look toward mountain runs, their feet twitching and hips shifting in anticipation. Lodging at Alta is configured differently than other
resorts, all managed and owned separately, making for an eclectic mix. From ski-in/ski-out inns to private homes, there’s a wide range of lodging options (visit the “Where to Stay” page on
Alta.com for a convenient list). Many of the inns include meals, and all are family friendly, providing a chill spot to rub shoulders with skiers from across the globe. Regardless of where you stay, make time to enjoy the après ski scene at Alta. There’s nothing else like it—locals and folks who come back year after year all gather to toast the day. If your idea of a perfect ski vacation includes skiing ex- ceptional snow, a casual atmosphere and strikingly beautiful terrain, Alta Ski Area is a sure win. —Erika Wiggins
