Bringing it full circle, Sundance glassblowers turn recycled glass into art.

How Utah ski resorts are stepping up as stewards of the land. by Brandon Ott


T


here’s a rustic, naturally lit building at the base of 11,752-foot Mount Timpanogos


that’s dubbed the Art Studio. What you find here is about as unlikely a scene as you’d ever imagine in the snow-studded mountains just south of Salt Lake City. The idea is simple, yet the execution is exquisite. Mexican glass blow- ers make an annual visit to Sundance Moun- tain Resort—drawn to the resort’s affinity for artists and keen environmental awareness. The resident artists recycle all of Sundance’s glass by transforming hot molten balls of discarded glass into art pieces, wine glasses, dinner plates and vases. Sundance offsets 100 percent of its carbon footprint with the purchase of


renewable energy credits and just signed on as a partner with Protect Our Winters (POW). Many other Utah resorts are creating green-


er ski pastures by tapping into Utah’s 300 days of sunshine. Park City’s Tombstone Ski Patrol hut is solar powered, saving approximately 2,200 kilowatts of electricity—the equiva- lent of 1.5 tons of carbon. Alta now has three buildings sporting solar panels, offsetting one percent of Alta’s total power usage. Everyone loves toys, and it’s safe to say that


Alta’s “green machine” is the envy of the snow world. Because Utah’s mountains are blan- keted under 500 inches of snow each winter, snowcat machines are a prized commodity,


which is what makes Alta’s newest purchase— the world’s first part-electric snowcat—special. Its hybrid electric-gas engine offers good grooming with far less emissions. Thanks, Alta. Just a mile down the road, Snowbird is chang- ing the game and rewarding its season pass holders with lift ticket incentives to carpoolers. Carpool enough to earn a free ticket to ride the mountain. To the north, Snowbasin introduced environmental initiatives that touch every employee and guest. The result? Impressively, last winter 47 percent of the resort’s waste was diverted, which translates to a reduction of 46 tons of garbage that was either recycled or composted and kept out of the landfill. 

You should get to know this group of snow lovers—a rising star in the outdoor community, taking the lead on climate change by mobiliz- ing the snowsports community. Ski Utah, Alta, Powder Mountain, Snowbird and Sundance have teamed up with POW to get people out of their cars and onto Utah’s growing ski bus system. The inaugural POW day took place on January

13, 2016, a grand event that encouraged skiers and snowboarders to ride the ski bus to the mountains. Why January 13? Playing off the POW acronym, this day is naturally Utah’s pow(der) day in that it is Utah’s snowiest winter day based on 50 years of snow data.
