upstart rum runners are causing a buzz. by Pamela M. Olson

High West Rendezvous Rye: Revered from Tokyo to the Scottish Highlands, this local rye is now a quintessential part of any whiskey-lover’s bar. It’s a blend of 95 percent rye aged at 6 years with a 16-year-old from Old Barton that is an 80 per- cent rye, 10 percent corn and 10 percent malted barley mash bill. $60

Antelope Island Rum: Crafted by Dented Brick Distillery, this spirit is named after Great Salt Lake’s largest island, where thousands of antelope and buffalo actually roam. Made from organic green cane sugar, non-GMO molasses and chemical-free water from an artesian well. $27

state’s reputation of being dry still persists. High West was the ground breaker, the first distiller to open in Utah since prohibition and the world’s first-ever (as far as anyone can tell) ski-in/ski-out distillery. High West just opened an incredible distillery and event venue at Blue Sky Utah, where tours and tastings are given with views of the Wasatch mountains. After High West uncorked the barrel, numerous more distillers followed suit, including some rock stars and newbies we’ve rounded up below. Watch for New World Distillery opening soon in Eden, Utah, at the base of Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley, focusing on agave spirits, gin and vodka produced using green processes and solar power, which makes it good for you, right? 

Five Wives Vodka: Ogden has always been known as SLC’s more rebellious sister city to the north, so it makes sense that Ogden’s Own would make a spirit that turns heads, as much for its controversial label as for its smooth flavor. A solid vodka with a subtle sweetness. $16

Sugar House Bourbon Whiskey: This small- batch distiller is the third to get its license in Utah, and it’s been steadily increasing its offerings. This award-winning whiskey is lovely on a couple of rocks, with notes of pine up front, caramelized sugar in the middle and a graham cracker finish. $40

Beehive Jack Rabbit Gin: This hit the market last year and took off quicker than a… you guessed it. Rose, sage, coriander and citrus are the strong flavors but it’s a delightfully clean, refreshing gin, perfect for a classic, excellent Gin and Tonic. Also try the Barrel Aged Gin. $26

Outlaw Distillery White Whiskey: A new whiskey slinger in town, Outlaw crafts this spirit with all Utah-grown wheat, oats and barley to produce a wheat flavor that has a lovely creaminess and a dominant oatmeal finish. Drink it neat at saloon temperature, or try it mixed with ginger, rosemary and lemon juice. $24
