MIGRAINE STATISTICS HEALTHY LIVING Health Insider

ACID REFLUX DRUGS LINKED TO MIGRAINE People who take acid- reducing medications to treat acid reflux may have a higher risk for migraine, according to a study pub- lished in Neurology Clinical Practice. Acid-reducing drugs include the proton pump inhibitors omeprazole (Prilosec) and esomepra- zole (Nexium), H2 blockers cimetidine (Tagamet) and famotidine (Pepcid), and antacid supplements. People taking proton pump inhibi- tors were 70% more likely to have migraine than people not taking proton pump inhibitors. Taking H2 blockers raised migraine risk by 40%, and antacid supplements increased risk by 30%.

MICROPLASTICS MIGRATE TO BRAIN Scientists estimate that people ingest 5 grams of microplastic particles each week, the equivalent to the weight of a credit card. For a study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, researchers exposed healthy mice to an equivalent amount of microplastics in their drinking water and found that the microplastics make their way from the gut into tissues of the kidney, liver, and brain. “These mice were exposed for four weeks,” said Eliseo Cas- tillo, Ph.D., of the University of New Mexico. “Think about how that equates to humans, if we’re exposed from birth to old age.”

COMMON B VITAMIN IMPLICATED IN HEART DISEASE Scientists at Cleveland Clinic have linked high levels of nia- cin, a common B vitamin previ- ously recommended to lower cholesterol, to a pathway that contributes to cardiovascular disease. “Historically, niacin has been used to lower cholesterol, but the key question is, does that reduce the number of deaths over time,” said cardiol- ogist Chauncey Crandall, M.D., author of the popular news- letter Dr. Chauncey Crandall’s Heart Health Report. “There is minimal research to come down with a good, honest answer about that.” The new study, which was published in Nature Medicine, discovered a connection between 4PY, a metabolite caused by the breakdown of excess niacin, and the development of heart

attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems. 4PY directly triggers inflammation that damages blood vessels and can lead to atherosclero- sis. “This pathway appears to be a previously unrecognized yet significant contributor to the development of cardio- vascular disease,” said Stanley Hazen, M.D. Hazen notes that the U.S. mandates the addition of niacin to flour, cereals, and oats to prevent deficiency, yet his research found that one in four people appeared to be getting too much and had high levels of 4PY.
