The Last Of Us

A true-life cops‘n’robbers tale, Stolen Hearts is a new limited series that recounts a Haverfordwest police officer’s whirlwind romance with a London entrepreneur in the mid-00s, and how their relationship wound up as tabloid sensationalism. Narrated by Kerry Godliman over six parts, it’s a cau- tionary tale about the blindness of love that’s highly bingeable.

What to watch after The Last Of Us

Comedians Ivo Graham and Alex Kealy have been seeing live music together for 15 years, and apparently, they have a lot to say about the experience – hence this new podcast. Each episode, they rope a fellow funny person into going to a gig with them, from Kendrick Lemar to Phoenix, compare notes and nerd out.

All hail Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay, who have given us that rare thing that is a good video game adaptation: HBO’s dystopian daddy-daughter survival series, The Last Of Us. Despite only just finishing its first season, some have been quick to claim it as the sole standout of its kind. Not so! So while you stick it out for the (possibly) two-year gap until Season 2, here are a few other strong examples in a similar vein to seek out.

Going back to 2002, Resident Evil – adapted from the beloved Capcom games – kickstarted a film series with extremely diminishing returns, but this first attempt remains memorable and disturbing. Colin Salmon gets his head laser cubed, what more could you want? Well, how about 2006’s Silent Hill, the most maligned and consequently underrated on this list. With a gorgeously chilling soundtrack, the film isn’t perfect but goes a long way to capture the haunting atmosphere of the iconic horror survival games.

Escape the Musky Twitter doomscroll with pundits Marina Purkiss and Jemma Forte’s bite-sized audio updates. Each week, sometimes more than once, the pair rake through the tweet swamp to break down Twitter wars, subtweets, viral videos and terrible takes so you can spend your toilet time staring at the cubicle walls instead.

The Trawl

Starting in 2017, Netflix’s Castlevania remains the most successful of the streamer’s ‘anime’ game adaptations: witty and thought-provoking writing from Warren Ellis, great voice acting, and whip-sharp animation. Netflix followed this up with its live-action The Witcher in 2019, turning Henry Cavill into the monster-bashing White Wolf in this bloody and graphic fantasy series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels-turned-games. 2021 indie film The Werewolves Within is also both those things, but adds a whodunnit twist reminiscent of Clue inspired by its online source.

However, the cream of the crop in my opinion is Arcane, another Netflix animated series from 2021. Fleshing out the lore of MMORPG League Of Legends, the French- made show is a breathtaking technical and creative achievement on every level. And for family-friendly honourable mentions, Detective Pikachu and both Sonic The Hedgehog films are pleasantly entertaining.

Music For Painting (Jim’ll Paint It)

Jim’ll paint anything you request: Optimus Amazon Prime, The Wu-Tang Clangers or a Tory squat party. The best thing to note, though, is that he’ll make it on the relic that is Microsoft Paint. He’s also gone and curated a playlist of tunes to paint along to.

Spotify playlist curator Kalyn Nicholson curates a list of ‘up and at’er beats’ to start your day. If you’re one for moody mellow beats or sentimental lofi tracks, you’ve come to the right place. Not an early riser? It also makes a great study/chillout/ housework playlist.

Though it’s missing Sheryl Crow’s Real Gone , I can forgive any playlist that features a song from Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk. Stateside synthpoppers Future Islands curate the perfect playlist for the open road… or you can just imagine driving a Cadillac from your flat in St Mellons.
