PRODUCTION COMPANY The unbelievable truth
“Documentaries have now become the world’s favourite entertainment,” says Glover. “We live in an era where if you read it in an airport novel you wouldn’t believe it.” The indie’s recent BBC three-parter The Elon Musk Show, directed by Marian Mohamed, is a case in point. “You couldn’t make it up. The world’s richest person is trying to colonise Mars.”
Entertainment is a natural next step. “We started out in areas where we were particularly known, Mark in docs, me in specialist factual. But we’ve always liked fact ent, and at Channel 4 I commissioned Gogglebox,” says Glover of his time as head of Specialist Factual at the channel. “We do like lots of different kinds of TV. For us it was always part of the plan to have a progression into fact ent.”
The Amazon Prime Video commission for a new James Bond competition series hoves into view. The new format will see contestants competing for £1m as they race around the world on a 007 treasure- hunt. 72 Films is collaborating with MGM Television and legendary Bond producers. “To be working with the Bond franchise is a privilege and a dream come true.”

“There’s a virtuous circle. If you do work people really like, good people want to work with you. Like a rolling stone, you gather momentum. More and more interesting, brilliant people join the gang. We get to know more very talented people and people trust you. The commissioners have liked what we’ve
done before and we’re trusted to do stuff that’s really exciting.” This year has also seen the follow up to Amazon Prime Video’s
Fremantle certainly feels that it’s picked a winner. “David and Mark, and their team at 72 Films, are exceptional talents, all of whom take enormous pride in their storytelling and filmmaking,” says Fremantle group ceo Jennifer Mullin. While Simon Andreae, ceo of Fremantle in the UK says, “Mark, David and the 72 family have developed an unrivalled reputation for telling the world’s most fascinating stories with real freshness and flair.”
What does 2023 hold for 72 Films? “We love box-set, archive documentary,” says Glover. “What’s interesting is the next step, it’s exciting to find new roads.”
Tottenham: All or Nothing, with Arsenal: All or Nothing. “Some of these are dream projects.”
The next chapter of 72 Films will be with Fremantle, who have recently taken a majority share in the indie. Glover says that one big reason for going with its offer, rather than others that were on the table, was “complete creative freedom. They want us to carry on doing what we’re doing.”
