BEST INDIE
In all forms of moving media, music plays an integral role in the art of storytelling. By evoking a wide range of emotions, music functions as a narrative tool, supporting other elements of the creative process.
SOME OF THE BEST STORY-TELLERS IN THE BUSINESS
BMG works with a wealth of world-renowned talent, creating content for shows such as A Year in the Ice: The Arctic Drift, Drive To Survive, Normal People and many more.
72 Films has mastered box set documentary. In the second year of winning the Best Indie Televisual Bulldog, co-founder David Glover describes how it is spreading its wings into factual entertainment and working on dream projects
However, with the growth of content being produced globally, from television series to social media; there has been a drastic shift in the way that content is consumed and created around the world. With moving media being consumed in so many developing territories, this has introduced a growing demand for locally sourced musical talent.
A lot can happen to an indie in just one year. 72 Films has had an eventful 2022: launching major new documentaries about Jimmy Saville, Elon Musk, Arsenal FC; getting a greenlight for its official James Bond competition format; and finding investors in the shape of Fremantle. What hasn’t changed is the level of respect from the industry, being voted best indie by peers, despite stiff competition, for a second year.
72 Films, launched in 2016 by David Glover and Mark Raphael, has built its reputation with a slate that has proved its mastery of the documentary genre for modern audiences, time and again. “TV as exciting and compelling as a drama
box-set, but it’s real,” says Glover.
This year, 72 Films is a double Televisual Bulldog winner, also winning for Best Documentary Series with 9/11: One Day in America, its epic re-living of the 2001 terror attacks which has already landed an Emmy, RTS and Broadcast award.
It feels a long way from factual entertainment, but 72 Films is bringing its confident approach into the fact ent arena. It’s working on a four-parter about Boris Johnson, who Glover describes as “at the epicentre of recent British history.” The show, billed as “the definitive documentary series,” is commissioned by Channel 4’s factual entertainment department.
As part of BMG’s A&R activities, this increasing need has meant sourcing international talent from regions such as India, South Africa and Turkey. With many more countries on our radar, we are very excited to work with more new and exciting talent in the coming future.
