As demand for studio space continues to surge in 2022, Elstree Film Studios are delighted to have opened the Platinum Stages for business. Named in honour of the late Queen in her Platinum jubilee year, the stages were a £15.6m project part-funded by Hertsmere Borough Council and the government’s Getting Building Fund via Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

DANCING TO THE TOP STRICTLY

With a total workable footprint of 34,000 square feet, the space offers the flexibility to be two separate stages or a combined super- sized stage.

As well as contributing towards the UK film and TV economy, the building of the stages provided the local community with extensive job opportunities and created learning opportunities and apprenticeships for students in the local area.

This was a stand-out year for Strictly Come Dancing. Its second production during Covid, without the big audience, and new working practices emerged. With the first ever deaf contestant, the cast and crew learned sign language and a new appreciation of how to experience the music. Creative director Jason Gilkison shares the challenges and highlights of a memorable edition

With Covid-19 still casting a shadow and participation of its first ever deaf contestant, Strictly Come Dancing S19 in 2021 was one of the most unpredictable – and, arguably, compelling – seasons so far, according to Strictly’s creative director Jason Gilkison. “It was such a memorable year for us last year with some incredible partnerships and dancers,” he recalls.

“The biggest hurdle was still Covid-19 because as a show we are so reliant on having a live audience, and the energy the couples get from it. So, we had to create the

same experience with us as the audience. And I was so pleased, because it turned out to be one of our best years yet.”

Effort was made to “up the ante” across every aspect of production – for all the group numbers, especially.

“Shooting in the second year of Covid, for the group numbers, we were able to draw on what had worked in 2020 and what hadn’t. So, we leaned in more to dramatic pieces with character to make up for not having the usual audience,” he says.

With a firm commitment to become net zero by 2030, the build of the Platinum stages with renewable energy heating systems and solar panels, will ensure these sustainability targets are met.

Elstree Film Studios look forward to continuing their creative journey with clients old and new.
