A GOOD WATCH THAT ONLY GETS BETTER

A friend to the viewer during Covid, Gogglebox has cemented its place as a jewel in the crown of factual entertainment. Executive producer Victoria Ray has known the show from the inside since its third series

CAPTURE

Our specialist remote workflow division, ENVY CAPTURE, has recently its first birthday. In that time, our talented team have travelled all over Europe, developing bespoke workflows and fixed rigs to create a seamless transition from set to suite. Some of CAPTURE’s most recent projects include Save Our Squad with David Beckham for Disney +, Love in the Flesh for BBC, and Lovestruck High for Prime Video.

Funny, sometimes controversial, always topical, Gogglebox was loved by many more than ever during the pandemic when, as a weekly viewing staple, it was prized for being familiar, warm and reassuring. And S18 and S19, which aired September 2021-January 2022 and February-June 2022, were no exception.

“Both were our first seasons emerging from the worst of the pandemic – a period during which everyone had been through a difficult shared experience – and there was renewed warmth for Gogglebox,” executive producer Victoria Ray observes. “We felt more relevant than ever.”

ACADEMY

Preparing the next generation of talent is a huge part of ENVY’s ethos. ENVY have stepped up with their training programme to assist junior members of staff making their first steps in the industry as well as providing opportunities for students looking to gain industry insight through their Work Experience scheme.

Take the cast’s reaction to Rose and Giovanni’s moment-of-silence dance on Strictly. “That was such a powerful piece of television that moved and inspired our families. I love when Gogglebox enhances an already emotional moment and reflects how we’re all feeling,” she recalls.

Or, indeed, those Number 10 ‘Party-gate’ revelations.

“The families’ immediate and visceral response to the alleged lockdown breaches really reflected the frustration, heartbreak

and sense of injustice many of us felt at this time,” Ray continues. “There was some very funny observational humour underpinned by personal stories of pandemic loss.”

Casting out of the box

Both examples demonstrate the keys to Gogglebox’s enduring success: humanity, diversity and longevity.

THE PASSION AND DRIVE TO MAKE EVERY SHOW AS GREAT AS POSSIBLE IS STILL THERE AND AS STRONG AS EVER

“We have a huge diversity of voices and a brilliant cast line up which combines people that have been on many series, and newer faces – such as Roisin and Joe from Scotland, who joined in S19, and Simon and his sister, Jane, who joined in S18. And we’ve been through a period of huge world events in the past 18 months,” she says.

“We hope we have added diverse

voices and viewpoints on all that in a way that’s been reflective, representative and reassuring, with humour.”

Casting involves, as it has always done, recruiting people who don’t actively seek to be on TV. So it relies heavily on street casting and word of mouth recommendation. And potential cast members are considered according to how they might enrich the show
