FACTUAL and the balance of the existing line up.

“Scotland had been a missing piece of the jigsaw for a while, for example,” says Ray. “As well as being funny and entertaining and warm, Simon and Jane have provided a great opportunity to reflect on disability and be more inclusive in that way. Above all else, however, the Gogglebox audience wants ordinary people who are warm and funny and relatable.”

Many of the cast members have worked on many Gogglebox series. And the same is true for those behind the cameras, too.

Loyal viewers, loyal crew

“We have a very long-standing team,” she explains. “I’ve been on the show on and off since S3. Many of my colleagues have worked on multiple seasons. Others, like me – I started out on Gogglebox as a field producer – have grown with the show.”

Covid-19 had a profound impact on all production, of course – and Gogglebox, which involves shooting cast members in their own homes over the course of each week during each series’ run, was no exception. But now, with lockdowns consigned to an

unpleasant memory, certain self-imposed restrictions continue – even into the current series, S20.

“We’ve continued a few of the changes we made to our filming practices – notably, having the team in rigged vans parked outside the homes of cast members, rather than inside in another room,” Ray continues. “At first, we were worried this might create a distance between us and the cast but it had little if any impact.”

Besides, members of the team fed back that it actually saves time not having to constantly de-rig and re-rig.

Despite the fact Gogglebox, which first launched back in March 2013, is fast approaching its tenth birthday, the love and enthusiasm all involved have for the format remains undiminished, Ray adds: “The passion and drive to make every show as great as possible is still there and as strong as ever.”
