An ICT infrastructure can make or break an FRS. It needs to be fit for the demands expected today and in the future. ESFRS has not been the only service with an existing ICT infrastructure holding it back and, similarly, it’s not alone in its ambitions to change. Introducing significant technology changes to aid business transformation – with the help of third party experts – can bring every FRS’s technology to the leading edge, while continuing to address future virtualisation opportunities. The benefits of a virtual infrastructure

approach are clear. It provides FRSs with a flexible platform for growth while improving


resilience, availability, application performance, cost efficiencies, and application and system integration. And, at a time when collaboration has never been so important, this approach also addresses the government’s demands to share information and services with other emergency service providers. Not all solutions are the same though. A superior approach should offer: • a ‘best in breed’ and scalable virtual infrastructure for computing and storage

• collaborative contract management and strategic ICT alignment

• a secure 24/7 service desk and network operations centre

• an information technology infrastructure library (ITIL) framework for service management and governance

• third party and vendor management

• access to consultancy and professional services

Ultimately, it needs to be able to support FRSs across a broad range of IT services – making sure that nothing stands between them and their life saving work
