Editor William Roszczyk introduces this month’s edition
ELCOME TO the June issue of F&RM, which focuses on the Grenfell Tower fi re one year on, and on the two themes of community safety and fire spread.
It’s hard to believe that it’s already been a year, but the impact felt by the country (let alone the fi re sector) continues to resonate from the Grenfell fire. That 71 people could die in a residential high rise in the UK in the 21st century is still something I struggle to comprehend, and it’s my sincere hope that both the public inquiry and the review of building regulations actually achieve widespread change and justice – not only for those people who lost loved ones last June, but also for those thousands of people who continue to live in fear of a similar disaster befalling them in their own homes. The ABI’s Mark Shepherd reflects on Grenfell Tower one

Articles can cover aspects related to fire, business and resilience planning, protection of lives and buildings, or insurance.
Our minimum word count is 1,500 words – we also require a two to three sentence author bio and print quality author headshot, for our contributors’ page, and high resolution images to support your piece. We do not run overt advertorial – the best way to proceed is to explain general principles or technologies in the context of fire and other risks, with mention of relevant products in a case study.

year later, and contends that a comprehensive reform of building regulations is the only option to prevent such disasters in future, citing the recent testing programme undertaken between the ABI and the FPA. John Cole of Secured by Design explores community safety in the sphere of the organisation’s work with the Grenfell Technical Group, while on fire spread, Jactone’s Craig Halford considers the new opportunities and advantages available via the range of direct automatic fi xed fi re suppression systems now certifi ed to LPS 1666. Our current affairs articles this month begin with Aviva’s
Chris Andrews explaining the risks associated with hot work, and asking whether we are doing enough to mitigate them. Next, FireAngel’s James Hall reports the potential issues associated with ionisation smoke alarms, and the latest technologies that are being developed to provide the greatest levels of protection. On cladding, Nick Jenkins of Booth Muirie argues that the cladding industry needs to stop second guessing fi re performance and take responsibility by acting on test evidence and ensuring compliance, while Horbury Property’s Richard Sutton asks why fire risk assessments might fail those they aim to protect, when the importance of passive systems is overlooked. As this issue goes to press, we will be in the midst of last
minute preparations for FIREX, and this issue has a small middle section focused entirely on the event in London. You can find a summary of the FPA’s Infozone seminar programme, alongside full timetables for both this and the FIREX Expertise and Guidance Theatre, before Pyroplex’s Andy Walsh takes us through the key principles to consider regarding passive fire protection ahead of successfully incorporating them into a fi re safety strategy. Next issue will feature reports from FIREX and the
RISCAuthority seminar, with our main focus on different, public and complex buildings. If you’d like to contribute an article to a future issue, please get in touch with me at
