Current affairs

Recognising this as a major issue, Finland introduced training and a formal licence system, and over the years more than 900,000 people have completed the training. This has had a dramatic effect in reducing hot work related losses, for which the figure today is just 5%. In addition, the public fire authorities recognised that they would respond to the fire if it started, and therefore became actively involved in the role and supervision of the fire watch. While there is no doubt that all within the

industry who recognise the dangers of hot work will continue to educate where possible, will this ever be enough? Will the culture change for those completing hot work and those who have been subcontracted the work, or do we need to initiate a greater change and follow the example set by our Nordic cousins? As an industry, we need to agree that

greater management around these activities can only be a good thing, and that now is the time to drive this forward, perhaps with the introduction of the Fire Protection Association’s Hot Work Passport system5

operations are being effectively managed and carried out by trusted competent persons, and that they are being correctly managed and minimised. It could also offer a wide range of benefits to the contractor, who will be able to demonstrate competence and due diligence through such a scheme
