Certification and traceability
Several industry recognised third party certification schemes are available which cover a wide range of fire stopping and passive fire sealing products. Independent third party certification schemes formally assure performance, quality, reliability and traceability of fire protection products. Recognised by regulatory authorities worldwide, these schemes are an internationally respected mark of fire safety and represent some of the most authoritative voices in the industry. The fundamental benefit of any third party
scheme is focused on giving the regulator, specifier, customer and end user confidence in the stated performance of the product, thus providing an informed choice when purchasing or selecting such components. Choosing a product that carries the mark of a reputable third party certification body gives assurances about the overall performance and effectiveness of that particular product. Maintaining full traceability for all fire
stopping components should be standard practice, and it is something that Pyroplex strongly advocates and supports. Avoid inferior products that are not clearly branded and proven with thorough test evidence from recognised testing houses. Only then can you be reassured that, in the event of a fire, your passive fire protection will work as intended.

Don’t overlook installation
You might choose effective, tested and certified pipe wraps, for example, but if your contractors or installers do not have the correct knowledge and skill set to install passive fire protection products, the pipe wraps will, at best, offer limited results. At worst, incorrect installation will render the system redundant, risk lives and lead to a greater level of damage to the building. Talk to your suppliers and manufacturers early in the building programme, as they will be able to recommend specialist installers or provide education and training for your existing team to ensure correct installation of their products at the right time in the build.
Help and advice
Understandably, everyone in the construction industry cannot be an expert on passive fire protection and have relevant, region specific knowledge to assist in an effective outcome. It is important therefore, to work closely with specialist associations, manufacturers and suppliers that can offer that service to you. In doing so, you will be able to develop a strategy that will meet the approval of the authorities first time and minimise delays due to unforeseen problems during the build. Plus, the completed building will be equipped to slow the spread of fire, leading to a safe evacuation and less costly damage.
