Five key industries disrupted by IoT ALL GOOD THINGS?

LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAINS IoT, equipped with blockchain technology (a secure way to trace and verify transactions), can enhance supply chains to create real-time validation of shipping points on an immutable ledger. IBM is leading this concept and implementing blockchain-based IoT tracking on its shipments. Analytics finds the most efficient way to send a vast network of items so transport vehicles never have empty spaces.

“[IoT devices] are a very easy attack surface and by far the easiest way to get into an organisation”

Tel Aviv-based Cy-oT claims to

shut down attack openings, giving businesses total visibility into all IoT activity and protecting against IoT and wireless-born attacks. “IoT devices are not protected by

design,” says Cy-oT chief executive Natan Bandler. “We need them to improve our

businesses and lives, but they are a very easy attack surface and by far the easiest way to get into an organisation, enabling hackers to scan your network, install malware, conduct reconnaissance, and exfiltrate data by bypassing other security mechanisms.” Safety first, then. From power grids to pipelines, the rise of

the machines looks imminent. Let’s hope that’s a good thing.

MANUFACTURING US manufacturers are projected to invest more than $70 billion in IoT solutions by 2020. The perennial drive for efficiency gains is pushing global manufacturers to increase automation as a way to reduce input and output costs. IoT aggregates data from machines to improve on them. IoT spots when repairs are needed and monitors systems as a whole. When paired with analytic solutions, IoT creates opportunities to produce items faster and more cheaply.

CONSTRUCTION IoT allows equipment owners to monitor fuel consumption,

idle time, fluid temperatures,

engine load and machine hours, and when to schedule maintenance. Contractors save money using IoT to draw comparisons between similar projects and through improved inventory tracking.

INSURANCE Insurance firms can assess risk levels of individuals sporting wearable devices and who may also qualify for premium discounts by doing so. IoT sensors are helping insurance companies reduce risk and cut costs by understanding how prone certain areas may be to earthquakes, the probability of mould occurring in homes or likelihood of fires.

HEALTHCARE Many firms are already working to connect clinical data to patients’ phones. Yet IoT is opening a new frontier in life-saving applications. Cyrcadia Health, for instance, has invented a bra with embedded temperature sensors. The iTBra tracks changes in temperature in breast tissue and uses predictive analytics to identify abnormal patterns that could indicate early stage breast cancer in women.
