Promoting research within AFT We are interested in fi nding out whether any of you are

currently engaged in research on any aspect of family therapy and/ or systemic practice. If you are involved in an ongoing research project, please could you send us an abstract of your research, names and affi liations of co-researchers, the timeline for your project, the source of funding and anything else you might like us to know about your project. We are revisiting the development of a couple version of

SCORE, and are looking for some volunteers to take this important project forward. If you are interested, please contact Peter Stratton at p.m. Stratton@ntlworld.com or Reenee Singh at ceo@aft.org.uk. Please could all of you who got a distinction for your Masters

(family therapy) dissertation, email the title and abstract of your dissertation to Charlotte or Astrid at the Family Therapy and Systemic Research Centre – SystemicResearchCentre@JiscMail.ac.uk. We are planning a research strategy day/research webinar on

the 16 November, so watch this space. New Devon AFT branch

Call out to Devon and Cornwall AFT members: Are you

interested in developing a South West AFT branch? Cornwall and Plymouth AFT branch are considering expanding their branch to include all of Devon. If you have a view about this, and/or would like to become involved please contact: Amy Urry, deputy chair of AFT: amyurry@hotmail.co.uk Liz Burns, chair of Cornwall and Plymouth AFT branch: liz@burns.myzen.co.uk

Are you are remote working or back in the room? For those of you working remotely, there are resources

available to support you on the AFT COVID-19 page, including Remote Clinical Working Guidelines and the recently updated Remote Training Courses Working Guidelines. Resources are added to the page regularly. You can reach these via the button on the AFT website home page. Many members will now have been working online for

some weeks and may have had training within the workplace or via online resources. It is highly recommended that members off ering clinical work or supervision remotely, do access training in online working to best support their practice. AFT is working towards developing a bespoke online training for working with families. With lockdown easing, some of you will have started seeing

clients ‘in the room’ again. Although it may be a relief to do so, you may have concerns about whether it is safe, and should follow your agency or organisation’s guidelines for resuming work in your clinic. These guidelines could include allowing intervals between appointments, the use of masks and sanitising

chairs and other surfaces between one client and another. They may also include a declaration from parents and clinicians that they are not suff ering from COVID-19.

Black Lives Matter We witnessed the tragic death of George Floyd and have been

shocked and horrifi ed by police atrocities in the U.S. At AFT, we are fully in support of the Black Lives Matter movement and our diversity, equity and inclusion committee has helped us draft a statement which can be found on our website (Please follow the link on the home page). I (Reenee) spoke to Huffi ngton Post about the necessity of

taking on a ‘both-and’ position when thinking about issues of ethnicity, ‘race’ and racism for an article titled Why Grindr Removing Its Ethnicity Filter Is a Complex Issue. We are planning a webinar to address issues of ‘race’ and

diversity and hope that you will be able to join us. The launch of The International Handbook of Black Community

Mental Health was very timely. The handbook, by the Ubele Initiative, was launched with a free Zoom event on Tuesday, 7 July 2020. This introduced the handbook, which explores an international perspective on the personal, lived experiences of people of colour in the mental health system. 50 years ago, the father of black psychology, Joseph L. White,

Professor at the University of California, published the seminal article, ‘Towards a Black Psychology’, challenging the dominance of white middle-class culture in determining what psychologists considered ‘normal’. Half a century on, many (white) people are still uncomfortable discussing the important and controversial topic of mental health and race. The publication of The International Handbook of Black Community Mental Health heralds that it is time for change and action, by bringing together the global work of researchers and practitioners including those from the UK, Europe and US. The handbook illuminates the personal, lived experiences of everyday racism, micro-aggressions, racial battle-fatigue, and implicit-provider bias encountered by people of colour within the mental health, school and university systems beyond the statistics. Crucially, contributors go on to not only outline and make policy recommendations but have developed proven interventions, including practical, clinical and therapeutic applications and new technologies that can help to address the problems encountered by both black mental health professionals and service users.
