I joined AFT in October 2018 aſt er


taking voluntary redundancy from HMRC, following 29 years of service. My career has been extremely varied and enjoyable but redundancy gave me an opportunity to pursue other avenues that I had become interested in. I am tasked with a wide range of duties


within AFT, from personally assisting our chief executive offi cer, supporting the board, professional aff airs and ethics commit ees and various sub-groups, to managing the professional functioning of the offi ce, and two members of staff , Melanie Wood and Kathi Ozmaya. My predominant focus is to co-ordinate


all communications within the offi ce and assist with the many queries received. I organise and at end all board, professional aff airs, ethics and annual general meetings, producing the agenda and minutes and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Last year I was involved in my fi rst AFT


conference at Newcastle, which I found to be very enjoyable. It was such a pleasure to see so many of our members there and provide support to my colleagues. T e varying roles I have within AFT


bring a fresh challenge every day, but being part of such a dedicated team, with seemingly an endless drive and passion for supporting our members, is what I enjoy the most.

The main focus of my role is producing


Context magazine; liaising with people who all play a vital part in making Context happen. The publishing committee, chaired by Ged Smith, deputy editor, with Brian Cade, general editor, plan issue themes, a sub-group forms a proofreading team, and some members review books. The whole team supports authors in sharing their ideas and work with readers. Since 2007, I’ve worked with many guest issue editors, producing quite varied themed and general issues. I recreate diagrams, source images and help with technical and copyright aspects of images authors wish to include. I set the articles, book


and production. In recent years, the number of adverts has greatly increased, since offering more cost-effective and timely digital advertising options, as Context is a bi-monthly publication. I deal with clients recruiting staff or promoting events and courses, or with agencies dealing with advertising on their behalf. I am responsible for the design of printed materials for AFT; conference programmes, marketing communications, stationary, information leaf lets, and even produced a book once. I also compile the monthly AFT email newsletters and now the email digest. I place advertising on the jobs, events and training pages, and make various website updates. We’re now involved in the process of planning a new website, which should result in a more streamlined, intuitive and accessible site. I work from home, which contrasts to


leading a studio of designers and desktop publishing operators previously, but as my role involves building relationships with so many people, it is always interesting. I enjoy meeting many of Context ’s contributors in person when working at the AFT conferences.
