Feed Production Update

By Ryan Mounsey

GREAT BRITAIN Quarter One Feed Production Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates, including integrated poultry units (IPU), in Great Britain during the first quarter of 2018 was 3,716,600 tonnes, 124,000 tonnes or 3.5 per cent greater than the output in quarter one 2017. 2018’s Q1 figures were also 264,300 tonnes or 7.7 per cent above the 10 year average for the period and the highest quarter one total on record. Total 2018 quarter one production of compounds, blends and

concentrates was made up of 41.2 per cent poultry feed, 31.0 per cent cattle and calf feed, 12.3 per cent pig feed, 10.7 per cent sheep feed, 2.5 per cent other feed and 1.5 per cent horse feed. First quarter production of cattle and calf feed reached 1,151,000

tonnes, 44,500 tonnes or 4.0 per cent higher than levels achieved at this juncture in 2017. 2018’s quarter one total was an even greater 60,800 tonnes or 5.6 per cent above the 10 year average for Q1. Despite a 100 tonne drop in pig feed production in March,

output during the first quarter of 2018 was 13,400 tonnes or 3.0 per cent higher than in the corresponding period of 2017, coming in at 456,300 tonnes. This was in no small part due to January’s strong production rates. Furthermore, 2018’s Q1 production levels were a significant 45,300 tonnes or 11.0 per cent higher than the 10 year

average, although they did not surpass the total produced during the same period of 2016. Poultry feed production including IPUs, in quarter one, at

1,532,400 tonnes, was 47,900 tonnes or 3.2 per cent more than the total produced through the first three months of 2017. Not only was the first quarter of poultry feed production 110,400 tonnes or 7.8 per cent greater than the 10 year average for the period but it was also the highest total output for the timeframe on record. A 28,200 tonnes or 7.7 per cent rise was also seen in quarterly

sheep feed production, with 2018 Q1 output reaching 395,900 tonnes, the largest total for the three months in five years. Additionally, 2018’s first quarter production was 34,100 tonnes or 9.4 per cent higher than 10 year average. With increases across all the monthly totals from 2017, first

quarter horse feed production was 2,900 tonnes or 5.5 per cent greater in 2018 than it was a year previous, having reached 55,400 tonnes. This year’s quarter one figures also compared favourably against the 10 year average, sitting 2,600 tonnes or 4.9 per cent above the mean. Following a marked drop in March production, other feed first

quarter output fell behind the levels achieved in 2017, sinking 12,800 tonnes or 12.2 per cent to 91,700 tonnes. Despite this, quarter one production in 2018 was still 12,900 tonnes or 16.4 per cent greater than the 10 year average and was the second highest total, behind 2017, in that same timespan. From a quarterly perspective, only other feed production fell

below year earlier levels, however Q1 2017’s production of other feeds far outstripped any other year on record for this period. All quarterly totals were significantly above their respective 10 year averages and the trend is one of steady growth across all sectors of feed production in Great Britain.
