Also set to be targeted first at the poultry section, Folium’s solution

is effectively a biome modulator which they’ve designed to reduce the risk of zoonosis and pathogens in animal rearing, while also securing better feed conversion rates in the process. On current development timelines, Folium expect to have five

products coming to market by the end of 2019, all with a capacity to be delivered as in-feed additives. “While we would never claim to be a ‘silver bullet’ solution to

antimicrobial resistance in livestock farming, our products will, we believe, provide producers with a distinct alternative in their battle to combat unwanted bacteria and so reduce their need to use antibiotics,” said Mr Fuchs. While both of these developments still have a way to go before

becoming an established part of the feed industry’s armoury, they certainly illustrate the way in which scientific entrepreneurs are approaching the task of helping farmers remain productive and profitable in the future. “The solutions proposed by this year’s finalists also demonstrate

the drive we have within Nutreco to play our part in resolving the issue of antimicrobial resistance,” said Nutreco Chief Innovation Officer, Viggo Halseth, congratulating the top three finalists on their success while also paying tribute to the quality in depth of all 52 original Feed Tech entrants.

Nutreco NuFrontiers Nutreco also choose the Wageningen event for the official launch of its NuFrontiers platform, which Mr Halseth described as the company’s new strategic innovation and investment division. “Through NuFrontiers we will be looking for joint ventures

and partnerships to create ‘moonshot’ projects that address major bottlenecks in the feed and food value chain,” he said. “We will also invest in starts-ups and scale-ups, exploring new technologies, ingredients and formulations. “Although working together with these types of companies is still

relatively new territory for us, it’s one of the reasons why we started the Feed Tech Challenge in the first place. In short, we want to get in touch with entrepreneurs and learn how we can cooperate with them more effectively, and we want to do it now.” In terms of hard cash, the NuFrontiers development carries

potential funding of up to EUR 20 million for the next three years, specifically designed to help start-up developers realise the potential of their discoveries. “There are a lot of good ideas out there, as we’ve already seen

through our Feed Tech Challenge, both this year and during the 2017 event,” he said, “We want to be involved, as an innovative company, in the best of these projects from the earliest possible stage, seeking access to unique ideas and unique developments through NuFrontiers. “We also plan to use the new division to broaden our range of

interests and activities within the value chain. That means we will be looking at projects which may well be beyond the immediate scope of our current Skretting and Trouw feed businesses, whether that involves finding new farming opportunities, embracing new areas of raw materials supply or something else. It’s an exciting future.”
