NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS – A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE! The use of synthetic antioxidants to maintain the quality of feed and ready-to-eat food products has been commonplace for the feed and food industry. However, consumer concerns regarding their safety has motivated the industries to seek natural alternatives. In addition, the call for sustainable sources and environmentally friendly production of feed and food products is the main force behind the venture into use of natural antioxidants.
The synthetic phenolic antioxidants that are commonly used in the feed and food industry are mainly butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), tert- butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) and propyl gallate. Natural antioxidants are important to animal health. They function as natural antioxidants to remove harmful free radicals produced through normal cellular activity and from environmental stressors, thereby maintaining the structural integrity of immune cells. Most of the plant extracts used for their antioxidant effects are also being used in the animal industry as alternatives to antibiotics as growth promoters. This article mainly address the sources of natural antioxidants, mechanisms of action and their applications in the feed- food industries.
Why natural antioxidants? The following are some of the main reasons behind the shift to the use of naturally occurring antioxidants:
Are beneficial to animal health (most of them also offer antimicrobial properties) Consumers are raising safety concerns on use of synthetic antioxidants Consumer willingness to pay more on food products originating from supplementation of natural additives. They are sustainable sources and environmentally friendly compared to synthetic products
