NEW SUPPLEMENT OFFSETS IMPACT OF POULTRY HEAT

STRESS A new supplement for poultry flocks from Farm-O-San which helps manage the risk and consequences associated with heat stress in poultry flock was launched at the Pig and Poultry Event by Trouw Nutrition GB.

A water soluble powder for easy use

in drinking water, Farm-O-San AHS is a balanced source of buffers, electrolytes and nutrients designed to help birds withstand the effects of elevated temperatures. By containing ingredients which address all the major consequences of heat stress, it provides a complete solution. “Exposure to elevated temperatures

can reduce the performance and profitability of poultry flocks,” according to Roxanne Winstanley, Farm-O-San Product Manager with Trouw Nutrition GB. “Modern birds are

more susceptible to the effects of exposure to elevated temperatures. Once ambient temperature rises above 26-28°C flocks face the risks of reduced production and increased mortality. The problem is made worse by increased humidity.” She says that when temperatures are

elevated birds have difficulty achieving a balance between body heat production and heat loss. Once exposed to higher temperatures birds will try to re-establish their heat balance by changing their normal behaviour, particularly panting. “Bi rds lose more water as a

consequence of panting and increased urinary loss which can affect the electrolyte balance leaving them at risk of dehydration. Increased respiration rate results in loss of carbon dioxide and a rise in blood plasma pH. Blood potassium and sodium levels decrease and chloride levels increase.” “Farm-O-San AHS suppor t s

the maintenance of flock health when environmental temperatures increase by helping birds maintain their oxidative balance.” The buffers help reduce pH, helping

to reduce respiratory alkalosis which is a common consequence of panting, while electrolytes help stabilise the electrolyte and water balance, helping birds avoid the risk of dehydration. Vitamin C is included to control cortisol levels and minimise oxidative stress.

“All the ingredients are highly soluble

and the product does not fizz or foam when added to water. Being easily and quickly added to drinking water, Farm-O-San AHS can be included when the forecast suggests temperatures are going to rise and before the birds start displaying signs of discomfort allowing pro-active management to minimise the impact of elevated temperatures,” Roxanne concludes.

NEW SHUT-OFF SLIDES FROM GAME ENGINEERING

Almost since the company’s formation, GAME Engineering has had a policy of manufacturing as much of a process system themselves as is practical. This is easily done because they have their own extensive factory with state-of-the-art metal- working machinery and a highly qualified, dedicated staff.

Manufactured from either coated mild steel or stainless

steel, the entire system is completely sealed and is totally dust and moisture proof. Actuation of the slide is by a solenoid and there is a choice of single or double heavy duty, double acting cylinders for activating the slide itself. Each Shut-Off Slide is delivered pre-wired to a junction box with external compressed air fittings already fitted. There are six sizes in the range: 150mm, 200mm, 250mm, 300mm, 350mm and 400mm. Adam Conroy is the Project Sales Director at GAME

The type of machinery that GAME Engineering routinely

manufactures – for their own use and for other system providers - includes paddle and ribbon mixers, rotary sieves, micro-ingredient weighment systems and a self-clean bucket elevator boot. The latest product from GAME Engineering is a series of electro-pneumatic Shut-Off Slides which can be fitted to bins, silos, screw conveyors and belt conveyors.

Engineering: “Whenever economically viable, we will always manufacture components for process systems ourselves. And, where we feel that there is a market for these products, we will offer them to other system providers which helps to cover the cost of design and development. Manufacturing products ourselves enables us to retain complete control over quality and design and should we need a product – a Shut-Off Slide for example – with slightly different dimensions we can manufacture it in our factory which saves time and usually, quite a lot of money .”
