HALF-TIME FOR VERAMARIS‘ ALGAL OIL PRODUCTION FACILITY IN

NEBRASKA Veramaris, the DSM and Evonik joint venture that will revolutionise aquaculture with its sustainable omega-3 oil from natural marine algae, has celebrated a major milestone in the construction of its new production site in Blair, Nebraska. In the presence of Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Mike Foley, the management of Veramaris and the two parent companies Royal DSM and Evonik, a topping-out ceremony was held on 4 June 2018 in Blair, Nebraska. The construction of the US$ 200 million

facility is progressing on-time and according to plan. Commercial quantities of algal oil will be ready for delivery in mid-2019. The initial annual production capacity of the Nebraska plant will meet roughly 15 percent of the total current annual demand for EPA and DHA by the global salmon aquaculture industry.

NWF AGRICULTURE PURCHASES REVOLUTIONARY NON-TIPPING

TRAILERS Fleet investment addresses safety of on-farm deliveries It has been reported that one of the most common causes of serious and fatal injuries in agriculture involves moving and overturning vehicles. As farm machinery and equipment becomes more prevalent on farm yards, bigger and complex in nature, the Health & Safety Executive is placing greater emphasis on safety when it comes to on-farm transport and delivery, to reduce the risk of accident, damage and harm to business reputation. In recognition of this, NWF Agriculture

has made a substantial investment in its fleet with the purchase of high-tech trailers to reduce risk and ensure safe delivery on- farm for both its farming customers and NWF drivers.

New NT Series Trailers by Muldoon The investment in three new revolutionary NT trailers, sourced from Muldoon, by NWF, mean that no tipping is required on-farm. The non-tip bulk blowers mean the trailer is less likely to hit overhead electricity cables, nearby buildings and there is a reduced risk of the vehicle becoming unstable compared to trailers that must fully extend. The NT trailer can unload compartments in any order, allowing planning of loads to be simplified and efficient. Most importantly its safer and more versatile as completely level ground is not required when unloading – making it the perfect delivery option for farm yards. Arriving this summer, two of the NT

trailers will be operating from the NWF Agriculture Wardle production site in Cheshire and the other will run from its production site in Wixland, Devon. Rob Warrington, Supply Chain Director

at NWF Agriculture, concludes: “Over the next few months fleet investment by NWF

Agriculture will be substantial. Alongside this, our recent £2million investment at the Wardle production site, demonstrates how, as a business, we’re seriously investing in our sustainability and future growth. In terms of innovation, it’s exciting for us to be adding three Muldoon NT trailers to our fleet. The danger surrounding tipping on farms has been a constant fear for operators and this has become more evident over the past few years, so we’re extremely pleased to be adding a transport option that is addressing safety on-farm. With its superior design, efficiency and safety, the NT trailer is really expected to excel.”

IMPACT OF COPPER IN PIGLET FEEDS DEBATED AT PFQC

CONFERENCE Last April, the Pig Feed Quality Conference was organized in Bangkok. Among the wide range of topics addressed to the Asian audience, Paul Bikker from Wageningen University reviewed the use of copper in pig diet. In addition to being an essential nutrient,

copper is well known for its growth promoting effect on weaned piglets. Paul Bikker demonstrated that this effect is maintained even under good nutritional and management practices with optimum improvements in faecal consistency and performance observed at 160 ppm of copper supplemented during 8 weeks post weaning. He also studied the influence of copper

sources on piglet weight gain and showed that copper(I) oxide (CoRouge®

) maximizes

growth enhancement in comparison to copper sulphate at 15 and 160 mg/kg of supplemented copper. This monovalent source of copper is

authorized in EU since December 2016 and will be registered in most Asian countries in 2018. In contrast to the black divalent copper oxide, CoRouge® bioavailability.
