EXECUTIVE REPORT continued
The Hybrid model retains the features and performance of the standard diesel TB216. The engine is used for unloading the machine from road transport and then to move it to an environmentally sensitive or indoor location, where it is plugged into a 3-phase, 415V 32A electric supply. Once connected, the excavator automatically switches to electric mode for emissions-free operation. The same levers are used to control the machine, so switching modes is seamless.
The maintenance-free electric motor is accessed by lifting up the rear canopy. By using an integral locking lever, the electric motor housing can itself be released and pivoted to the side to access the engine’s service points. Diamond Hire & Sales is pleased with the performance of its Takeuchi TB216 Hybrid machines. As well as digging buckets, it can supply these ‘green’ minis with matched Epiroc SB102 hydraulic breakers.
The extra electric motor in the hybrid Takeuchi is housed in its own compartment behind the engine.
Demolition robots added
Over the years the
Diamond fleet has included a variety of Brokk demolition robots weighing from 600kg to 4,000kg, hired out with digging buckets, breakers and crushers. These remote-controlled tracked machines have been used on many major demolition projects, including the iconic Battersea Power Station in London. Three electrically powered Brokk 160 robots were hired to Oldham-based Delta International to speed the removal of the old 51m-high chimneys at Battersea so that they could be rebuilt as part of the building’s refurbishment. Diamond helped plan the demolition operation and modified the machines to provide the greater reach needed to carry out the high-profile work safely and efficiently.
Having gained a wealth of experience with demolition robots, Diamond Hire & Sales is now introducing a new brand into the UK market, having become the dealer here for the growing RDC range made by Euroimplementos, based near Barcelona.
Euroimplementos has grown by producing road/rail conversions for excavators and backhoe attachments for skid steer loaders, as well as selling a wide variety of buckets and attachments for wheel and skid steer loaders. In recent years, it diversified into

making self-propelled demolition robots, with the first RDC models with variable width rubber tracked undercarriages, having operating weights of 1,850kg to 2,050kg. They are powered by 18kW and 22kW electric motors and are radio remote-controlled.
Smaller model developed
Having evaluated these machines, Diamond Hire & Sales considered that they provided a good alternative to established brands and it has worked with the Spanish company to develop a lower-weight unit. The result is the brand new RDC 1510 that weighs 950kg and can carry an attachment such as a hydraulic breaker weighing up to 190kg. Currently in the UK for operational trials, this small demolition robot folds up to provide a travel width of only 780mm. With its four outriggers angled down to provide a working width of 1,720mm, the machine’s three arms can be extended forward to enable a breaker point to reach out to 3.7m.
The RDC 1510 has an ABB 15.0kW electric motor and a variable flow LS axial piston pump with a Parker valve block that provides a hydraulic flow of 50 litre/min at a pressure of 175 to 250 bar. The machine is operated at a safe distance by means of an HBC-radiomatic Spectrum radio remote controller that has a range of 150m. Diamond’s machine is fitted with a quick coupler and, when I tried out the unit, it was carrying an Epiroc SB152 hydraulic breaker.
Diamond Hire & Sales is also now a dealer for products made in America by National Flooring Equipment. One of the machines it has already imported is the electrically powered 6230 Commander walk-behind scraper unit for removing a variety of floor coverings including vinyl and carpet tiles. It is being offered both for hire and sale, and Richard Fielding expects it to become a popular addition to the company’s growing specialist product portfolio.
