JCB 1TE - Review Dumper of distinction

Nick Johnson checks out JCB’s recently introduced 1 tonne electric dumper and concludes this is very worthy of consideration by pioneering hirers

S

ite dumpers remain an important category for non-op plant hire

companies and, as the demand for environmentally designs increases, JCB has ably responded to the challenge. Having originally introduced a complete range of site dumpers in 2015, initially through a short lived badge-engineering deal with Terex, JCB has now achieved good market share with its in-house designed and manufactured dumpers. And their popularity is set to increase following the arrival of an electric version of the company’s 1.0 tonne payload 1T-2 High Tip.

its E-Tech blue and white chevron markings and its offside charging sockets, the 1TE also has a dropbox and prop shafts (to take the drive to the ZF axles) whereas the 1T-2 has four Poclain wheel motors.

Hire companies can benefit from being able to supply not only the 1TE dumper but also other JCB electric machines and matched off-board chargers.

JCB was not the first company to introduce a small articulated dumper with electric drive. But where the company now scores is having this sort of machine as part of a growing family of different E-Tech products including the 1.9 tonne 19C-1E mini excavator, the 500kg payload HTD-5 E-Dumpster tracked carrier and the 525-60E compact telehandler – together with a range of matched charging equipment.

Hire companies looking to offer something different from their competitors will also be attracted to the new 1TE electric dumper because it can be supplied with JCB’s new Smart Safety Package option. The enhanced 1TE will tick many boxes for safety conscious customers needing a quiet, emissions free compact dumper able to work effectively in noise and fume sensitive urban areas including cities with ultra-low emissions zones.

Putting the established diesel-engined 1T-2 High Tip dumper alongside the new 1TE electric version quickly reveals some of their design differences. Visually distinguished by

Other externally apparent differences are the use of both drive and brake pedals on the electric dumper (the diesel version only has a single drive pedal) and a handbrake lever beside the seat on the electric machine (instead of the dash board mounted handbrake switch found on the diesel machine). Internally the 16.1kW (21.6hp) Perkins 403J.II engine and 30 litre fuel tank of the diesel machine has been replaced by two 48V 5kWh lithium-ion batteries and two electric motors – a 7kW traction motor and a 4.5kW motor to

independently power the hydraulic functions.

JCB has sensibly designed the 1TE to have the same operational performance as the 1T-2. So maximum load over height (with skip fully elevated and tipped) is 2,392mm and maximum travel speed is 11.9km/h.

The quiet, responsive electric dumper is easy to drive and the operator is protected by both the folding ROPS frame and the two-stage Drive Inhibit system. The latter comes complete with a seat pressure switch, which is designed to ensure that the driver correctly wears the seat belt during machine operation. A green flashing beacon indicates seatbelt secured.

Another good safety feature for the new 1TE is JCB’s clever Smart Safety Package option (first launched for the diesel 1T-2). With this package machine track is increased from 850mm to 988mm to increase stability and there is a tip-alert alarm.

lights which illuminate sequentially from green, through amber to red as stability decreases. As the skip is raised or tipped, the system senses if the machine is leaning sideways, forwards or backwards. If the lights reach the amber stage, an audible warning is given to notify the operator to either lower the skip or move the machine to a more stable position.

Having cleverly used its LiveLink telematics system to study the typical usage of compact site dumpers, JCB is emphatic that its lithium-ion battery capacity in the 1TE is sufficient to provide full shift operation in typical use. The batteries can be recharged from conventional site electrical supplies, with 110V and 230V cables available. In addition, the optional JCB Universal Charger can be used to rapid charge the batteries for extended operation.

JCB states that the full re-charge time is 8 hours 25 minutes with a 110V industrial supply, dropping to 7 hours with a 230V domestic supply and 4 hours 25 minutes with a 230V industrial supply. A particularly good alternative is the use of the matched JCB Power Packs or the rapid Universal Charger (which is said to replenish the dumper’s battery charge from 0 to 100% in 1 hour and 25 minutes). Providing an off- board charger together with the 1T-2 will provide enterprising hire companies with another revenue stream. n
