Head of waste fi rm has been nominated for inspiring award
ANDUSIA Recovered Fuels Director, Steve Burton, has been nominated by Grant Thornton as one of the 2018 Faces of a Vibrant Economy. For the past two years, Grant Thornton have celebrated the top 100 faces, which are showing progression across the private and public sectors. It also highlights how they are providing inspiration to young people through either growth, innovation or purpose.
exportation market for RDF, and how the company are leading the way in recovered fuel solutions.
RDF comprises non-hazardous, with recyclables, organics and fi nes removed – so it is ready to feed into waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. Andusia collect RDF from waste

management companies in the UK then deliver it to Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants across Northern Europe and Scandinavia. With an unrivalled understanding of the waste and recycling industry, they are an award-winning pioneer in sourcing, specifying and distributing RDF. Steve’s story therefore resonated with Grant Thornton, which is where his nomination stemmed from. Having established Andusia in 2012 with fellow Director, Stewart Brackenbury, the
company has gone on to become the UK’s largest independent exporter of RDF. Also winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade in 2016 and fi nally collecting its millionth tonne of RDF waste earlier this year. Looking ahead, Andusia are expanding into the Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) and hazardous waste market, which is a higher quality alternative to RDF. The fuel consists of smaller fractions with a higher energy content. The higher calorifi c value means it is suitable for use in cement kiln facilities. Without the use of such a recovered fuel, the cement industry would no longer be a competitive or viable business. SRF directly replaces fossil fuels such as Petcoke and coal and off er an excellent environmentally friendly alternative. SRF follows a similar treatment process as RDF. However, the end of the process sees this material shredded to a much smaller fraction. The sorting process is also more thorough resulting in the waste ending up in a purer state than RDF.
