Waste Resource Operative Apprenticeship Standard at Level 2 now available


IN NOVEMBER’S issue of Skip Hire & Waste Magazine, Wamitab provided information about the newly available apprenticeship standard for Metal Resource Operative at Level 2 (Ref ST0507). In this issue we are happy to announce that the Waste Resource Operative at Level 2 (Ref ST0545) is now available. Brief information about the Waste Resources Operative (WRO) includes a typical length of 12 months to become qualifi ed and the current funding band is up to £6,000 per apprentice. The content of the programme includes a study of industry awareness; environmental protection; circular economy and sustainability; health and safety; identifi cation, processing and disposal; communication techniques; and teamwork skills and customer service.


Qualifi cations required


Apprentices must achieve Level 1 English and maths and take the test for Level 2 prior to taking their end-point assessment. The role also provides professional recognition and apprentices are eligible for Technician Grade membership from the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM).


Who is it for?


The WRO covers a number of roles and responsibilities in the collection, transport, processing, disposal and recycling of waste and recyclables. The WRO may work in a range of sites and locations including household waste recycling centres (HWRCs), materials recycling facility (MRF), transfer stations, trade waste collection, energy recovery facilities, anaerobic digestion facilities, composting facilities, re-processors, and municipal waste collection. The individual could be employed within a whole host of roles, such as: • Agriculture (farms or anaerobic digestion plants), or mining and quarrying, construction, soil processors, landscapers, research and development (laboratories);


• Utilities, waste (local authorities, private companies, liquid waste and septic tank emptying, landfi ll and energy recovery);


• Local authorities, charities (third sector), armed services;


• Health (hospitals and hospices). What will they do?


The role of the WRO is to assist in the day-to-day running of the site or activity, to ensure that processes are carried out safely and effi ciently. They will also contribute to the protection of the environment, guide effi cient use of resources while enhancing quality in compliance with relevant regulation. They will also contribute to delivering best-in-sector operational performance in the organisation.


What does the apprenticeship cover?


Industry awareness of the waste and resources industry including knowledge on types of waste and treatment options. There will be an education of the waste hierarchy and principles of waste management such as recycling, reuse, collection, sorting, segregation, transfer stations MRFs, HWRCs, Refused Derived Fuel (RDF), Anaerobic Digestion (AD), In-vessel and windrow composting. Environmental protection principles will be of foremost importance along with the purpose of environmental protection in the waste industry, which includes duty of care, waste hierarchy, organisational policies, and objectives for environmental protection. There will be a review of Environmental Permits for applicable site(s), to access awareness of what wastes are permitted on site; on-site pollution sources, pathways, receptors, and the potential environmental impact. Pollution control measures will include physical, legal and organisational policies and procedures.


Responsibilities


Operations – operation of company systems and procedures for receiving waste recycling and other materials. Communication – how to communicate eff ectively with in-house peers and correctly dealing with confl ict with internal and external contacts. Health and Safety – consistently follow


organisational health, safety and hygiene procedures, practices and standards. Positive behaviour – accept ownership and responsibility for own behaviours and actions, and work in a professional manner at all times. Customer care – show dignity, respect, empathy and professionalism when dealing with others, including customers, colleagues and the public. Inclusiveness – demonstrate an awareness of the needs and concerns of others in line with equality and diversity company policies and legislation. Professionalism – act fair, consistent and impartially. Work in a team and be open, honest and operate within organisational values. Throughout the 12-month programme apprentices will complete a learning log or portfolio. There will be formative knowledge and understanding assessments as well as employer appraisals and off -the-job training and development. Once these elements are complete, the employer, in consultation with training provider, agrees the apprentice is ready for end-point assessment and arrangements are made with the End-point Assessment Organisation (EPAO).


End-point Assessment


There are four parts to the Waste Resource Operative Apprenticeship Standard at Level 2’s conclusion – which is as follows: 1. Multiple Choice Question test (online or paper-based);


2. Professional discussion based around 10 questions from a bank developed by the EPAO;


3. Workplace observation of specifi ed tasks set by EPAO;


4. Apprentice is graded on basis of end-point assessment outcomes – Fail, Pass or Distinction.
