Industry leader aim to close recycling loop and reduce gypsum mining
BACK in January, New West Gypsum Recycling UK moved to a new site in Weston-Super-Mare. The two main reasons were for larger premises to keep up with the demand in the industry and to improve the output through a state-of-the-art recycling plant. One year on, the company, which is part of a bigger worldwide operation, has been able to increase the amount of gypsum to recycle, and remain an industry leader. In 2017 the UK-based site recycled over 40,000 tonnes of gypsum. This year, even with the four months it took for the relocation and refurbishment of the plant, the company is on target to increase throughput even more, in order to recycle approximately 50,000 tonnes by the end of 2018. Due to plasterboard being infi nitely recyclable with no degradation to the end product, New West Gypsum prevented that amount of irreplaceable raw gypsum rock being dug up from the ground. Also, because the company believe in true closed loop recycling none of the excess powder is used for land spreading, where it is taken out of the recycling loop.
Four main commitments
With all of the above in mind, New West Gypsum work closely with the plasterboard manufactures not only in the UK, but worldwide so it is ensured that the company’s four main commitments are met. • The goal that no gypsum material ever ends up in a landfi ll is realised. The material’s properties do not degrade so materials can continue to be reprocessed over and over again. Gypsum is an infi nite reuse material, so it is important to return the material to plasterboard manufacturers to be reintroduced into the manufacturing process;
• Working with green building associations and governments to educate and bring awareness to the construction industry;
• New West Gypsum Recycling can process both wet and dry gypsum material;
• Paper liner material is baled and reused or reprocessed. The company work with various paper brokers to ensure all of the liner material separated from the gypsum is repurposed.
Moving forward to 2019, the company remains relentless in its eff orts to keep improving the way it recycles plasterboard by investing in its recycling plant, leading to increased plasterboard recycling to help the environment. An example of this is to reduce the need to mine virgin gypsum rock, which will preserve a valuable natural resource for generations to come.
