WASTE RECYCLING
Tackling rising insurance premiums: Firemain’s Thermalert designed to detect and protect
FIREMAIN Engineering Ltd, based in St Helens, Merseyside, have been supporting the fire protection industry since 1990. Specialists in foam cannons and remote control fi refi ghting systems, the company can supply bespoke product designs to suit various customers and provide expert experience with cannon commissioning in the most demanding of environments. Whether in high risk refi nery fi refi ghting requirements or waste-to-energy plants, Firemain’s in-house design and project management is supported by qualifi ed and skilled support engineering crews commissioned to maintain equipment. The latest design of the Thermajet range of cannons combines thermal imaging cameras with a programmable soft-spraying jet cannon, which is directed to a fi re zone by a control panel – containing computer-controlled and specially written software.
The company’s aim is to bring 30 years of fi re-fi ghting experience to the recycling industry in a professional engineering capacity. For Firemain’s skilled personnel, extinguishing fi res with the most effi cient use of water and foam is a daily job.
Competitive advantage
One of the company’s leading products, the Thermalert Camera (pictured), is a tough harsh environment device, which keeps watch on a 24-7 basis. It uses a 360˚ rotation pan-and-tilt camera, which is able to detect crucial temperature changes in areas, reducing the risk of developing fi re, if not curtailed. Thermalert can detect and notify rising temperature via PC or SMS, which then triggers the Thermajet Cannon to activate. Catching any early signs of ‘hotspots’ is vital to minimising the spread of fi re in recycled materials. Thermajet systems off er value for money compared with very complicated, or overly-sophisticated designs. This system is simple, easy to use and maintain, and is backed up by a local team of skilled engineers willing to back-up their products and systems.
Extensive benefi ts
Thermalert cameras can cover large areas on a continual basis. They are easy to link to PC networks or sync so warnings can be alerted via SMS to inform managers and owners of high temperature issues within their facilities. High-defi nition video information is transmitted alongside the thermal imaging data for access to real-time

visualisation of a problem area in a plant, on site, or for internal and external locations. Whether the weather is harsh or dry, the camera provides constant scanning and continual feed-back.
Competitive pricing
Obviously, aff ordability is key – so the Thermajet can be confi gured to the size of the risk. It can be matched to small or large facilities and in doing so can be made economical for smaller sites – or be capable of covering large areas requiring higher fl ows and water storage. The use of Firemain’s foam agent, Toppex – at very low admix percentage – means that the water extinguishes, penetrating far faster than plain water without additive. The use of Toppex will reduce the amount of water used and therefore will minimise the potential for run-off and later catchment issues. Rising insurance premiums
for waste fi rms
There is great pressure from the Environment Agency and insurers to reduce the number of incidents involving fi re and the environmental consequences. Once adequate fi re protection measures are installed, insurance premiums are often negotiated downwards. Thermalert software is designed to detect and protect customer assets and personnel. Having a Thermalert system is as benefi cial as having a fi re warden and a night watchman on permanent standby. Not only will it watch, alert and

notify, but it will extinguish and show the results via advanced technology, providing peace of mind to those who have a lot to lose. Firemain Engineering’s facility in St Helens has its own manufacturing workshop, 3D computer design sector, testing bay area, and piping software. The Firemain team welcome all current and potential customers to visit the company site in order to see a working demonstration of Firemain’s full capabilities.
