The new syllabus for Continuing Competence became live on Friday 1 March 2019. In the last issue of the magazine we covered some of the background to the changes; in this issue we are focusing on the Generic Knowledge elements of the Continuing Competence Tests, as everyone is required to do Environmental Protection, Health and Safety and Legislation tests.


ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SYLLABUS


1. Environmental Risks • Environmental Risk assessment • Awareness of pathways / receptors • ‘Appropriate Measures’ • Written Management System 2. Controlling Emissions


• Control of litter, odour, mud, dust, vermin, noise and fl ies


• Discharge of water from site


• Major emissions from your facility which need managing / reporting


3. Containment and storage on site • Impermeable pavements • Sealed drainage • Hard standing • Bunding • Interceptors • Oil storage • Waste quarantine areas 4. Fires • Fire Prevention 5. Environmental incidents/spillage • Steps needed to remediate problems • Prevention • Reporting • Enforcement


• Spill kits (including what to do with the absorbents)

It is recommended that those preparing for the test refer to the current syllabus for each of the tests as there have been changes to all the topic areas. There are free update sheets for each topic (apart from Landfi ll Closed as that has undergone more extensive changes to the structure/content), which are designed to accompany the 2016-2018 editions of the revision guides but are
