Targeting overlooked markets

Although Screenpod do manufacture crushing and screening products, it was decided that the company should put most of its resources into varying its product portfolio - specifically, into markets the bigger firms have neglected.

This led to innovations such as the production of Screenpod’s Dust Cannon S-Series range. On the sales side of the business, Screenpod’s new S-Series range has been ‘flying off the shelves.’

For me, to proceed with Brexit means we, as a collective, are taking an unnecessary risk.

Home truths

County Tyrone is undoubtedly a commanding nucleus for the design and manufacturer of waste recycling equipment, but Bill explained his thoughts of where this foundation of innovation originated from.

Bill said: “Throughout the crushing and screening manufacturing base in Northern Ireland, I’ve met some excellent welders and fabricators – with a lot of them coming from Eastern Europe.

Unfortunately, Brexit has caused a lot of chaos throughout this area.

“A lot the guys who have come over to Dungannon are now looking elsewhere – because they feel there’s less of a ‘cash advantage’ for their skills in County Tyrone.

“Personally, I believe Eastern Europeans seem to have a better grasp of welding and fabricating, which is arguably due to the training they received. Eastern European countries have unbeatable technical schools, which were all set up under the old Soviet regime – and historically speaking, these areas of Europe produce tremendous grounding for this industry.

“I’ve worked with all walks of life over the years and for me the hardest- working people have been either Czech, Polish or Slovakian – their work ethic is phenomenal.

“For me, to proceed with Brexit means we, as a collective, are taking an unnecessary risk.

“Hanging on to great welders and fabricators is difficult. It is a sellers’ market and if these skilled Europeans can see stability in other countries then we can’t blame them for wanting to move on. Which is a shame because Poles, Czechs and Slovaks are the best welder-fitters I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

Although Screenpod have been looking to meet the demands of markets other Dungannon firms have neglected, working together with the bigger manufacturers is a no-brainer; this is

where Screenpod Sales Director, Paul McGoldrick comes in.

“In business, networking is everything. Paul is well connected with a worldwide manufacturer in Omagh – along with that manufacturer’s worldwide export sales division.

“We’ve even been working with McCloskey Equipment through a sub- contract for four machines, set to be shipped out to Oman,” said Bill.

With Brexit creeping closer, Screenpod and other manufacturers in the area are looking at the positives. Going forward, Bill explained the implications to them of Britain’s exit from the Customs Union and how it could mean cheaper importing of mechanical components. For example, – conveyor belts, valves, gear boxes, and motors – whether they be electrical or hydraulic – which mainly come from Italy. He concluded: “We may design and build all the framework, but like all the other major firms, we buy-in motors and drive components, so due to currency exchange – in theory – it would be cheaper to import these components.”

Looking to the future, Screenpod as a brand has become more recognisable and with that there has been a rapid increase in orders. In correlation with this growing success, the Dungannon firm is now placing more emphasis on reaching out to more UK-based dealers, which comes on the back of the recent partnership with Advanced Material Processing (AMP) contracting in Scotland.
