SKIPS, PRODUCTS AND SERVICES The Skip Lady becomes high-vis hero

NOT all heroes wear capes – some wear high-vis jackets!

Non Harries from Greenacres Skip Hire, who shot to internet fame as ‘The Skip Lady’ with her ingenious photographs standing inside skips, is flying the flag for local star and “incredible young girl”, Belle Curran.

Funds raised for the charity, Belle’s Story, go to help Belle, a remarkable 10-year-old girl who is on constant oxygen awaiting a double lung transplant.

Generous Belle has been very busy raising money for the wonderful charities that have supported her, namely The Puffin Ward at Withybush Hospital, Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital, the children’s hospice Ty Hafan, Great Ormand Street Hospital and Make-A-Wish.

Kind-hearted community members - including Belle’s godfather, director of Greenacres Skip Hire and Non’s boss, Paul Nicholas - have rallied together for a series of fundraisers, from the classic to the truly inventive.

"[I]t was a bit of light- hearted fun to make people smile"

“As well as carnival bake sales and running half marathons, Haverfordwest Ladies Circle (the Chair of which is Mandy Stirling, Belle’s godmother) have done a beautiful, tasteful calendar with transplantable organs drawn on their bodies,” said Non.

“Then there’s Paul who has converted a skip into a ‘skip car’ using parts from a Reliant Robin. He’ll be doing a sponsored

drive once we hit April or May – driving in the winter’s not such a good idea when you don’t have a roof!”

Meme queen

Non became determined to amplify Belle’s cause after her company’s website photographs turned her into an accidental celebrity.

“About two years ago we were updating our website,” Non explained. “Paul and his son Andrew had seen a website which used the outline of a person standing next to a skip to give people an idea of their relative size. I said: ‘Why not just get someone to stand in it?’ And when we came to photograph our skips Paul said, ‘Well, it was your idea… in you get!’ So I climbed inside.

“A lot of people at the time thought it was a good idea as, when people order skips, they quite often haven’t really thought about how big it needs to be. Seeing someone in it gives them a sense of scale.”

Then, in November 2018, Radio 1 DJ Greg James saw the photos and catapulted Non (who is 5ft 6”, in case you were wondering!) into the limelight on his show as The Skip Lady.

“I did an interview on Radio 1 and then it just exploded. I was suddenly a meme. There were photoshopped images of me all over Twitter: I was on the front of the Titanic with Greg, wedding photos of the two of us, I was on a packet of KP Skips – it was good fun but did get a bit silly.

“It was around Christmas time as well, so it was a bit of light-hearted fun to make people smile. I think it was a nice break in the news from Brexit.

“Thankfully it only lasted about four minutes – which I’m perfectly happy with. I’m yesterday’s chip-wrappers. But if it helps Belle in even the smallest way then I’ll be happy.
